» The surfacing of recent vulgar rants by Thai youngsters towards their parents on social media has stirred my frustration. Causes of parental let-down are often the same. These teenagers, mostly from hard up families, believe they are being abused by their parents' inability to provide them with modern-day frills — the latest smartphone model or a motorcycle.

» We were living only 60km away when the Columbine High School massacre took place in Colorado, USA, 14 years ago. It was one of the world's most shocking school shooting sprees. Since then, more than a dozen shooting massacres have horrified the world, including those at Virginia Tech in 2007, Northern Illinois University in 2008, Albertville Secondary School in Winnenden, Germany, in 2009 and Utoya Island youth camp in Buskerud, Norway, in 2011.

» Some blame it on the media. Many have thrown the guilt completely at the failure of our educational system. But the recent controversy over schoolchildren in Ratchaburi and Phetchaburi indulging in sexual activities in public, which very much contradicts Thailand's long-perceived image as a country where children obey their parents and abstinence is held in high esteem, boils down to the parents.
