Guru, Pornchai Sereemongkonpol, Published on 12/01/2018

» Thai Children's Day is tomorrow and it's time to change you profile picture to when you were younger and cuter (and weren't liable to pay taxes). We here at Guru would like to celebrate this special day with some outstanding kids who have achieved unique accomplishments before they hit 18.

Let There Be (En) Light (enment)

Guru, Pornchai Sereemongkonpol, Published on 15/07/2014

» Some of you may be feeling like you have to give up your weekend bar-hopping since today is Asarnha Bucha Day and tomorrow is Buddhist Lent Day (never thought these holy days would appear on our sin-filled pages, did you?). Instead of giving you tips for being ordained into monkhood or what kind of animal to release to gain the most merit, we want to help you nurture your spirituality with our selection of peace-loving havens that can be found right here in Bangkok. We also have other cool ways to make merit without having to get up super early to give alms to Buddhist monks. May the inner peace be with you.

Geek out

Guru, Pornchai Sereemongkonpol, Published on 04/07/2014

» If you’ve ever fantasised about sitting on the Game of Thrones’ Iron Throne, hugging a life-sized Rilakkuma, and/or taking a selfie with an army of Stormtroopers, you can make your geeky dreams come true at Bangkok Comic Con (fb.com/bangkokcomiccon, B150 per ticket), which runs from today (Jul 4) until Sunday (Jul 6) at Siam Paragon’s Royal Paragon Hall. The Geek God has blessed us with another opportunity to geek out again after Thailand Comic Con in May. As the event kicks off, we break down the highlights from Bangkok Comic Con and also tell you about made-in-Thailand comic books.

Facebook police

Guru, Pornchai Sereemongkonpol, Published on 26/06/2014

» Haven’t we all used Facebook to complain about something we see as wrong at some stage? There are some Facebook pages created and dedicated to raising awareness on improper behaviour in public places that you may not be aware of. Check them out in case you want to share your frustration, see what not to do so you won’t end up on one of these pages, or at least get a laugh out of them.

Co-working communities

Guru, Pornchai Sereemongkonpol, Published on 20/06/2014

» Bangkok has many options of co-working spaces for freelancers, start-ups and small companies and their number is on the rise. Two such places — Hive and Ma:D — opened last month while one more — Street67 — is on the way.

Pop culture explosion

Guru, Pornchai Sereemongkonpol, Published on 09/05/2014

» Darth Vader and his Stormtroopers will invade Bangkok this weekend! And no, we’re not saying that as a side effect of the Star Wars marathon we went on to celebrate Star Wars Day (May 4) or the announcement of the Star Wars: Episode VII cast. It’s because Thailand Comic Con 2014 is taking place from today until Sunday (May 9-11) at Siam Paragon and the arch-villain and his soldiers will make an appearance there. This week, to help you embrace your inner geek (we all have one — don’t be in denial), we present what you can expect from the pop culture event along with other ways to geek out in Bangkok.

Change-makers

Guru, Pornchai Sereemongkonpol, Published on 25/04/2014

» Recently the BTS launched a campaign to encourage Thais to start using escalators properly. Y’know, walk on the left side or stay on the right if you want to stand still. While we’re at it, we think they should discourage people from hugging the centre poles between their buttocks unless they’re strippers (go to fb.com/ohmysat to see what we’re talking about).

Funny or flippant?

Guru, Pornchai Sereemongkonpol, Published on 21/03/2014

» Thais are sanook people. We like to have fun and don’t take things too seriously. Although we here at Guru all enjoy off-colour jokes every now and then, there’s a fine line between making light of someone or something and getting a laugh, or doing the same but drawing a big “boo”. This week, we examine five of the most controversial flippant actions that took place in Thailand. Judge for yourself whether they went too far.
