Versatile tamarind

» When the hard shell of a tamarind pod is peeled off, it reveals a reddish-brown coloured pulp. While the sweet and mildly tangy pulp is a refreshing snack and can be used for cooking, juice or even candy, the seeds -- which are the by-products -- were always regarded as waste.

» The road leading to Ban Neon Kum in Bang Krathum district in Phitsanulok is quiet. Along the road are farmlands consisting mostly of banana plantations. For more than a century, locals in Bang Krathum have grown the fruit for producing sun-dried bananas -- known as kluay tak in Thai. Kluay tak is a Geographical Indication (GI) product of Bang Krathum. About 4,000 tonnes of kluay tak are produced yearly.

As chairperson and CEO of Solar Power Company Group (SPCG), she likes to start her day at the top floor of the new 10-storey headquarters in Thong Lor when the Sun rises. Her working day ends late. She goes to bed at midnight. Hard work is her routine, which she has kept from a young age. Born under the sign of the dog, she turns 60 this year, but retirement is not part of the plan.
