» 1 Bangkok has been bombarded with an amazing line-up of concerts this year, and for any rockers out there, American industrial metal band Nine Inch Nails (NIN) will be bringing their explosive set to Bangkok on Aug 14 at Lat Phrao's Moonstar Studio. » The 1980s was a period when non-Anglophonic mainstream bands started to make waves at festivals and music stores in Europe. Pioneering festivals like Angouleme in France exposed bands from Africa, Asia, Middle East and the Caribbean to international audiences. This is how the first wave of the boom in so-called "world music" started; these bands then began to release albums, which were often marketed from indie record stores. This is how we found out about Salif Keita, Mory Kante, Cheb Khaled and Mahlathini and the Mahotella Queens.

» Congratulations! You've made it to through 2017, a rather challenging year characterised by a series of unfortunate events from the rise of Alt-Right and the Weinstein effect to devastating hurricanes and starving polar bears. We've also lost a handful of musicians along the way -- Soundgarden's Chris Cornell, Linkin Park's Chester Bennington and Tom Petty, to name but a few. Thankfully, those who are still alive and kicking have served up some of the most memorable tunes we've had the pleasure of hearing this year. Handpicked from our Playlists over the last 12 months, here are the top 20 singles that have soundtracked and defined the year that was. This week we're picking up where we left off last week with the remaining tracks. And before we close up the shop, let's once again pat ourselves on the back, for 2017 was no child's play by any standards. May you have strength and courage to wade through Trump's tweets and Prayut's tantrums in the coming year.
