An urban oasis for city cyclists

Life, Pongpet Mekloy, Published on 11/08/2016

» Despite the fact that the Peppermint Bike Park in Soi Yothin Phatthana 3 has been in operation for over a year, I have never gotten to visit it. That's mainly because I don't have the patience to brave Bangkok's notorious traffic to an unfamiliar part of the city.

Ride through history

Life, Pongpet Mekloy, Published on 04/08/2016

» Built over 150 years ago during the reign of King Rama IV, Charoen Krung was Bangkok's first Western-style road. Nicknamed New Road back then and many decades afterwards, Charoen Krung starts from the east side of Wat Pho next to the Grand Palace, initially running eastward before beginning to gradually shift south as it crosses the Rob Krung canal into the northern part of China Town.

» Chiang Mai's iconic mountains, the adjoining Doi Pui and Doi Suthep, are internationally famous as home to some of Southeast Asia's longest downhill tracks. For mountain bikers who are not DH hardcore and also enjoy the challenge of climbing, these mountains definitely have a lot more to offer. The awesome route featured in today's article is just one of the many "all-mountain" trails available there.

No more pining for Pineapple

Life, Pongpet Mekloy, Published on 23/06/2016

» It was about two years ago when the Pineapple track was built on Khao Hin Lek Fai, the hill that is home to Hua Hin's best mountain bike playgrounds. But almost as soon as the local riders could finally enjoy the fruits of their labour, the track suddenly became forbidden. The TV signal transmission station on the uppermost part of the hill refused to allow bikers to enter its premises to reach the trailhead. And that's it.

Blazing new trails in Wang Nam Khieo

Life, Pongpet Mekloy, Published on 16/06/2016

» Often when you get phone call from a friend who doesn't regularly keep in touch, it's either because he wants to invite you to his wedding or is in some kind of financial crisis and needs to borrow money. But recently when my mobile rang and the incoming call showed the name of Oat, a fellow mountain biker who runs a resort and golf course in Prachin Buri, I knew right away it must be something exciting.

Braving the bull run

Life, Pongpet Mekloy, Published on 02/06/2016

» Rural Highway 3052 runs along much of the northern edge of Khao Yai National Park serving as a shortcut between Thanarat (3077) Road to the west and Highway 304 in Wang Nam Khieo to the east. Over the past few years, this area has become a popular holiday destination, especially among well-to-do city slickers. However, not many of those tourists are aware that at the back of the many luxury resorts along the south side of the rural highway there's something which separates them from the protected forest that is home to numerous wildlife.

Conquering new terrain

Life, Pongpet Mekloy, Published on 12/05/2016

» Despite the fact that Hua Hin and Cha-am are in different provinces (the first is in Prachuap Khiri Khan and the latter in Phetchaburi) the coastal parts of these two adjacent districts are often considered by holiday makers as one and the same area. I visit these parts several times a year, not to enjoy the famous beaches though but for mountain biking. And now there's a good reason to go there more often.

» Last week, as I was scanning Google Earth for a biking route that's not too far from Bangkok, the memory of a boat journey I took over a decade ago sprang to mind.

Ride through Thai history

Life, Pongpet Mekloy, Published on 14/04/2016

» Songkran, the traditional Thai New Year, is the time Thais living and working in all parts of the country return to their hometowns to reunite with their families. This year, the festival reminds me of a special place where family members not only can spend quality time together but also learn more about the country's history as well as its diverse cultural heritage. More than that, it's one of the best places to enjoy a leisurely bike ride.
