(Un)masking 101

Guru, Pornchai Sereemongkonpol, Published on 01/07/2022

» The mask mandate has been lifted in anticipation of downgrading Covid-19 to an endemic, which comes into effect today. The biggest question you may have right now as we're going through this transitional period, heading back to the old normal, is probably when and where you can unmask. However, if you think you can free your face from any coverings and leave your mask at home, you should read the following first. Here's what you need to know before you mask (or unmask).

Dealing With A Covid-19 Side Effect

Guru, Pornchai Sereemongkonpol, Published on 22/01/2021

» One side effect of the Covid-19 pandemic that you may have overlooked (besides amassing a vast collection of hand sanitisers and exposing govt inefficiency -- kapow!) is more waste, especially plastic. Inevitably, it is exacerbated by our appetite for food delivery while we're WFH during this quasi-lockdown. The first wave saw an increase of plastic waste by 60% in Bangkok due to the higher demand for food delivery as estimated by Thailand Environment Institute in May last year. Thailand Research Development Insitute also claimed that one such order can contain up to seven pieces of plastic waste (so opt-out of utensils when you order please).

Taking noodle up a notch

Guru, Pornchai Sereemongkonpol, Published on 16/02/2018

» The Setting: A kuay tiew experience doesn't have to mean a quick shophouse meal where all the tables have the flimsy pink papers for wiping everything and plastic jugs filled with tea that look like they have never been washed. If the idea of kuay tiew has become uneventful, Mamarin Noodles can spice it up for you (lame food pun intended). You see, the new kuay tiew restaurant highlights a Ban Beung (a district in Chon Buri) variation of the popular street food while taking it up a notch with the cosy ambience and, most importantly, quality ingredients.

You had one job: Thai edition

Guru, Pornchai Sereemongkonpol, Published on 08/12/2017

» Have you ever felt like you're not so good at the only job you have? For example, having a major writer's block over things to write about in an editor's note or failing to catch a typo. I guess we all have that moment when we think we could have done something better. If so, don't be too hard on yourself, since there are other examples in Thailand where people have failed, rather hilariously, in their jobs. We're only human, after all. Here are some fun blunders to cheer you up after a bad day in the office!
