Rika, uncaged

Guru, Jarupat Buranastidporn, Published on 03/03/2017

» Those familiar with the MMA scene in Thailand may have already heard of Rika Ishige. Her nickname, "The Smiling Assasin", should already give you a clue as to who she is. This chika isn't just another pretty face, she's also the first Thai female MMA fighter that will be competing at the ONE Championship (fb.com/ONEChampionship) happening next week. She talks to us about what it's like to date and train with her other half, what she thought of the Rousey-Nunes fight and the common misconceptions people have about MMA. Knock 'em out, Rika!

Extreme new year pep talk

Guru, Jarupat Buranastidporn, Published on 30/12/2016

» What does a new year bring, if not hope and the prospect of starting over with a clean slate? Especially when 2016 was such a mess. And no, we're not just talking about America electing a racist and sexist narcissist for a president.

The making of a soi

Guru, Jarupat Buranastidporn, Published on 09/12/2016

» 2016 has been full of ups and downs, highs and lows. It has, without a doubt, been an interesting year to say the least. So we can't help but wonder what 2017 has in store for us. Will Trump stick to his policies? Who knows. Will there be another car-related Thai hi-so drama for the public to scrutinise? Most likely. What is certain for Bangkokians though, is that our city will continue to change its landscape. Sadly, we think it may be for the worse, seeing as the new Bangkok governor's agenda includes projects to remove street vendors from Silom, Siam Square and Pratunam.

Not your usual lunch ladies

Guru, Jarupat Buranastidporn, Published on 02/09/2016

» Anyone who has ever worked or is currently working in the F&B and hospitality industry knows that the word "easy" is not a part of the job description. And anyone who says otherwise, is probably not doing it right. From dealing with difficult customers and unreliable suppliers to spending long hours on your feet in the kitchen working under tremendous pressure, there are a myriad of reasons that make working in F&B sound far from a dream job to most. But there are those few out there who welcome these challenges and manage to do it with a smile still intact.

Au Naturale

Guru, Jarupat Buranastidporn, Published on 17/06/2016

» First of all, hats off to anyone in the F&B business attempting to do something vaguely new; us Bangkokians aren't a breed so easily persuaded to cross uncharted waters. So stubborn and set in our own ways, for a long time we actually thought the only "real" pizzas were those flat and crispy, and that the only types of cheese we favoured were those that tasted like melted plastic.

Paws galore

Guru, Jarupat Buranastidporn, Published on 01/04/2016

» Like most children, I spent my childhood hoping to find a puppy inside every one of my birthday presents. I also longed for the day my parents would finally cave in to my constant begging and puppy-dog eyed looks every time we passed a pet shop. Twenty odd years later, they haven't flinched one bit. Paired with the fact that we've always lived in an apartment building where no pets are allowed, watching Cesar Millan rollerblading with a pack of dogs became my only solace.

Dye hard

Guru, Jarupat Buranastidporn, Published on 01/04/2016

» Life in Bangkok can often be described as fast and furious, but if you're stuck in the usual rush-hour traffic jam, painstakingly slow would also jump to mind. Kanchalee "Ann" Ngamdamronk and Sergey Tishkin first met in Japan, where they both completed a special art course in hand dying textiles. They returned to Thailand and founded Slowstitch Studio, where they work with traditional (albeit time-consuming) methods and botanical materials to create individually hand-dyed textiles. Guru chats with Ann to find out what it's like to work with your other half and why dying your own fabrics at home isn't as complicated as you'd think.

Post-new year's syndrome

Guru, Jarupat Buranastidporn, Published on 08/01/2016

» Let's nip this in the bud. Holiday season is officially over. Phew, and we thought that was going to be hard to say. As it turns out, writing it down is much easier.Since we're not ones to mope nor sulk about how we've already broken the resolutions we set seven days ago (thanks to that piece of leftover cake in the fridge), we thought it best to give you, Dear Readers, a quick rundown on how to get over holiday withdrawal and grab life by the horns (and 2016 by the balls).

Be kind, be mindful
