» If you weren’t sent to Earth from Krypton yesterday, you’ll know American superheroes have been dominating international pop culture in recent years; in fact, people seem to have developed a literal appetite for their beloved men (and women) in tights.

Anything but a raw deal

Motherly moments

Guru, Pornchai Sereemongkonpol, Published on 07/08/2015

» Thai Mother’s Day is only five days away, but we’re sure you’re well aware — all that fake jasmine in your local 7-Eleven has undoubtedly taken care of that. For the occasion, we have devised our own Chutes and Ladders game to help you rediscover the sweet (and sour) moments you’ve shared with your mother, as well as new ways to honour her. Penthouse prices, penthouse pleasure

Guru, Pornchai Sereemongkonpol, Published on 12/06/2015

» Mugendai (which is Japanese for “infinity”), has been on a roll with its famous sushi — lame pun intended — since 2011. Its new branch, on the top floor of the Helix Building at The EmQuartier, is aptly named Mugendai Penthouse and belongs to Kamolsut Dabbaransi, who founded the original Mugendai Honten in Thong Lor and Muteki in Sathon. Mugendai Penthouse has built on the franchise’s existing culinary repertoire by adding about 40 new dishes to the menu. We dig the fact that Mugendai Penthouse offers several settings for different occasions. Enjoy some F&B to mellow tunes from a DJ in the main dining area, which is spacious and inviting thanks to the high ceiling and floor-to-ceiling glass wall. Get a seat at the long wooden bar, where you can watch a sushi chef work his magic. Behind a façade resembling the exterior of a traditional Japanese house are two private rooms with low tables, tatami and sunken floors, so you can truly dine like the Japanese. For an LED-candlelit dinner, head out to the large balcony, where lovebirds can eat next to a small pool and a bonsai garden, with a side of city view. Diners are mostly Thai.

The glass is half full (of wine)

Guru, Pornchai Sereemongkonpol, Published on 17/04/2015

» Judging from the number of restaurants with the word "wine" in their names, it seems many Bangkokians have accepted Jesus juice into their lives. The Glass Bangkok is a new member to that sector, honouring the vessel rather than the liquid itself. Drinkers at this French bistro can get the same value for their baht whether they're guzzling wine by the glass or bottle. The centrepieces of the establishment are four high-tech dispenser machines, measuring 36 wines in 3cl, 6cl and 12cl pours. This way, you can sample from different bottles — red, white, rose or organic — without putting a dent in your wallet (prices start at B50). The floor-to-ceiling windows allow entry to an ample amount of natural light, while the high ceiling adds a spacious feel to the modern dining area. The crowd here consists of Thais, Japanese housewives and expats.

Down the rabbit hole

Guru, Pornchai Sereemongkonpol, Published on 24/10/2014
