News, Veera Prateepchaikul, Published on 29/02/2016

» Former prime minister Chavalit Yongchaiyudh, whose nickname is Big Jiew, has always been an amazing public figure to me. Government offers dubious excuses for rice price cut

News, Veera Prateepchaikul, Published on 24/06/2013

» Here is some simple arithmetic. Suppose you are a miller and you pay a farmer 15,000 baht for a tonne of paddy and, after the grain is milled, you sell the produce at 10,000 baht. Your loss is 5,000 baht, which is simple and straightforward.

Who really benefitted from the rice scheme?

Veera Prateepchaikul, Published on 18/06/2013

» Better late than never. The Yingluck government is finally back-peddling on its most ambitious and, perhaps, most destructive populist policy, the rice pledging scheme -- which set the purchase price of paddy about 40% above market price and cost taxpayers 136 billion baht in losses, according to official estimates, in just the first year, with more to come.
