» The raison d'etre for the coup four years ago was to root out corruption. I think only the most gullible fell for that ploy to wrest power from a democratically elected government. I suppose that the wealthy and well-connected were getting nervous to see their position and privileges being whittled away and threatened by a government supported by "red buffaloes" from the North, and getting afraid of no longer being first in the queue to receive the fruits of corruption.

On May 9, 1950, French foreign minister Robert Schuman presented a historical declaration proposing to jointly manage, through a single supranational authority, the industries needed to wage war -- coal, iron, steel. The Schuman Declaration was adopted by six countries -- Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, Luxembourg and the Netherlands; May 9 is since considered the founding day of the EU.

» In commemorating the 30th anniversary of Asean-China relations later this year at the summit level, it is expected that China will be represented by Xi Jinping, who has yet to attend an Asean-related summit under his presidency. Of course, this is just a plan for both sides, which still need further discussion to celebrate their "shared future" trajectory. After all, when Asean agrees on the upgrade of China's longstanding strategic partnership to a comprehensive one, there must be a very special li-you (raison d'etre) to do so. And the list is long.
