» There are certain restaurants where the point of the dining experience has less to do with satisfying food than with the overall experience that the establishment delivers. At one end of the spectrum for this kind of place are the "molecular cooking" dining rooms like the late, lamented El Bulli in Spain or, locally, our own Sra Bua where, for a considerable price, one can have the pleasure of conversing with table companions through clouds of vapourising liquid nitrogen while sampling surreal culinary creations, served in dainty portions, in which exquisiteness stands in for more substantial virtues.

» Last weekend a shared craving for Isan food sent Ung-aang Talay and some friends to Lat Phrao Soi 101, where there is a branch of the Tam Mua restaurant that had impressed a food-alert neighbour of U-a T's strongly enough to inspire him to mention it twice. It turned out to be an appealingly informal place with customers seated on square stools rather than chairs, simple decor, and the the kind of relaxed atmosphere amenable to long sessions of eating and talking.

» When a friend suggested a visit to the Sri Yaan area this past weekend for an evening meal at a restaurant called Panettone, Ung-aang Talay naturally conjured up images of a table groaning under the weight of an array of antipasti, heaped plates of pasta, a fragrant parmigiana or oreganata dish and, perhaps a pre-seasonal slice of the Italian Christmas bread after which the place was named.

» Fai Klom Thana looks so typical and unremarkable among its surroundings on Vibhavadi Soi 11 that, as with so many good small restaurants in Bangkok, it is easy to drive right past it, unaware that high-art cooking is going on inside. But on a recent Saturday afternoon, Ung-aang Talay and food-alert friend AB were on the lookout for the place, following up on a recommendation from a hard-to-please chef who had visited it and left impressed.

» There is a type of Thai restaurant here in Bangkok that might not look especially interesting at first glance. The outside is ordinary and unremarkable and the decor inside is simple: tables and chairs that look well-worn but clean and not shabby, menus that have obviously been around for a while, a kind of relaxed, lived-in atmosphere. But a closer look reveals certain details that send special signals to the tutored eye.
