» Everyone and their mother are well aware that floods suck, period. But give it to the Thais who manage to make the most of the rains as shown in these pictures, which I hope will lighten up the heavy rain (with no intention to glamourise it).

    Mixing Art with Belief

Guru, Pornchai Sereemongkonpol, Published on 13/09/2019

» Mixing art with belief can be a recipe for controversy, especially when you think outside the box. Three Ultraman-inspired paintings of Buddha images by an unnamed uni student that caused an online uproar earlier this week are a case in point. She meant no disrespect by portraying Buddha as a superhero. The analogy is quite obvious as Buddha fights the world's evils through his teaching while the Ultramen fight the kaiju monsters. A flattering comparison, if you ask me. However, she was pressured to tearfully apology for -- in my opinion -- doing nothing wrong. Her biggest crime is interpreting Buddha through a contemporary pop-culture lens. It's the price she had to pay for portraying Buddha image in any way else besides sacred, I guess. Most importantly, didn't Lord Buddha teach us not to hold on to idols and be open-minded?

» Every Bangkokian knows that the MRT has launched a trial run for its five new stations. This is perhaps, one of the most gleeful news we have received this year (we haven't had much of that lately) as it allows you and me an easier way to explore beyond the three S's of Bangkok: Siam, Silom and Sukhumvit. Not that these three areas are guilty of anything but there's so much more to Bangkok that awaits your discovery.

    Opulent Osha offerings

Guru, Pornchai Sereemongkonpol, Published on 09/01/2015

» Osha has made a name for itself as a luxurious Thai restaurant in San Francisco since opening in 1997. Its first outlet in Bangkok officially opened on Dec 12 after a soft launch period. Not only can you expect modern twists on familiar fare here but also a real show of theatrical ambience. The swank atmosphere of Osha incorporates Thai inspirations all over the place (without making you feel like you're dining in a convocation hall of a Buddhist temple). A picture of Hanuman swallowing a pavilion is projected onto the restaurant's entrance as if you're about to enter a place of momentous importance. Look up from the comfy couch to the ceiling that serves as a canvas for projected pictures of Thai mythical and heavenly beings. Ascend to the upper level via a golden staircase with a giant piece-de-resistance chada (traditional Thai headdress) chandelier hanging in the centre to get close to the golden ceiling. Here you can dine at a semi-circular seat shaped in a monk's bowl with views of a Thai mural depicting Ramakien. A private room is also available on this level if you want to have a very hi-so private party.
