The philanthropic photographer

Guru, Pornchai Sereemongkonpol, Published on 22/09/2017

» Surachai "Pui" Saengsuwan, L'Officiel Thailand's fashion editor and photographer, is known for his work in various Thai fashion magazines as well as reality competition shows such as The Face and The Face Men Thailand. But you may not know that he has been behind the lens of several photography projects to raise awareness around serious causes. He collaborated with Tom Potisit, also a well-known fashion photographer, to create "Anatomy 101" in 2015 to raise awareness on organ donation. In July last year, he created an online campaign for the Pic-A-Pet4Home shelter where he photographed handsome cadets with their canine friends to raise awareness on dog adoption. We talked to him about his latest project for Down Syndrome Hero Thailand (fb.com/downsyndromeherothailand) to de-stigmatise those who are born with the condition.

Why Thailand Won't be 4.0 Anytime Soon

Guru, Pornchai Sereemongkonpol, Published on 25/08/2017

» We all have already heard the much-touted "Thailand 4.0" vision -- an aspiration for our beloved country to become an advanced version of itself -- but it seems all recent evidence points to the contrary. Here are some reasons why I believe the chances of Thailand reaching 4.0 are, unfortunately, very slim.

When textbooks get it oh-so-wrong

Guru, Pornchai Sereemongkonpol, Published on 26/05/2017

» Textbooks are meant to inform learners of facts -- not alternative forms of fiction -- on a particular subject. They also provide students with information on things relevant to them, helping them to navigate their lives and make sense of the world.

You're just a big kid!

Guru, Pornchai Sereemongkonpol, Published on 13/01/2017

» It's okay to be a kid every now and then. By that, we don't mean asking your parents for permission to go out, throwing a tantrum when you don't get what you want or picking your nose and eating the booger either. Eww.

Oh, the Places I won't Go!

» The school fees mum and dad do pay, so I'd better get some damn good grades, But some of those teachers they scold, so grey, or like to throw things in my face.

Veggie prince

Guru, Pornchai Sereemongkonpol, Published on 21/10/2016

» Nakorn "Prince" Limpacuptathavon, 33, is the poster boy for sustainable farming in the city. He started growing chemical-free vegetables on a piece of land next to his own house eight years ago. As his enthusiasm for all things green grew, he began hosting activities at his learning centre, Ban Jaochai Phak, or Veggie Prince's House, in Lat Prao Soi 71 and now talks at various events to spread his organic farming know-how. Guru chatted with Prince about how urban farming can benefit city life, in case you may want to get out your shovels and garden forks.

Burgers, baos & bikes

Guru, Pornchai Sereemongkonpol, Published on 17/10/2014

» At the risk of sounding lame (and giving away our zero knowledge about motorcycles), a burger is kinda like a bike (except for, you know, you can't take a bite out of the latter). You see, the patty is the engine. The sauce is the fluid stuff that keeps the engine working well. The buns are whatever part of the bike that keeps everything together. This is also the basis behind a new burger joint with an interesting concept called Scrambler Cafe. Besides five pre-built burgers on offer, you can order a "custom bite" burger where you can select what type of bun, patty and sauce to go into it like you would do with a custom bike. The concept and ownership of the open-air cafe, which is located at Market Place's parking space, belongs to Ducati Thailand. The place is named after Ducati's iconic motorcycle model named Scrambler, which will make a comeback around the end of this year. A cooking team from 50/50 restaurant controls the kitchen. Two shipping containers have been stacked up, painted bright yellow and turned into the kitchen. The dining area is covered with fake grass and there are about 30 not-so-comfy chairs. Judging by the casualness in the air, this isn't a place to take someone on a first date. The patrons aren't just bikers as the venue also welcomes office workers, bicyclists and expats.

Through Thai eyes

» Some ordinary objects that have a straightforward use elsewhere in the world seem to have more application or deeper meaning through Thai eyes. This week we search for ordinary objects with extraordinary uses in Thailand.
