Karma's on our Side

Guru, Mika Apichatsakol, Published on 10/03/2017

» Her name draws immediate intrigue. On one hand, it's just a damn cool and contemporary name. On the other hand, knowing that she's repping Thailand in an all-female group exhibition celebrating women for the occasion of International Women's Day, we're curious of what themes and images this clearly multicultural homie will bring to the table. We spoke to 29-year-old artist Karma Sirikogar to pick her brains about feminism and also learn more about her background and style of visual abstraction.

We didn't start the fire

Guru, Mika Apichatsakol, Published on 10/03/2017

» People, it's not even April yet, and the city feels as though it's been chosen as the launch site for the opening of the gates of hell. Stay cool and hydrated. Make this your daily mantra. This, we're serious about. But as you sip your sweet ice coffee under some air-conditioned refuge, we offer you a light-hearted recap of a few funny, exciting or random bits of news that are theoretical and totally scientific explanations of why this country is so ******* hot right now!

Zoom into Love

Guru, Mika Apichatsakol, Published on 18/11/2016

» If you're a dancer or have ever been one, you'll know that most of it is practice. Practising at school. Practising at home. Practising on the streets. In the sheets -- wait no. The point is it's a lot of practise, a lot of behind-the-scene stuff. Which is not to say it isn't fun. It just makes the opportunity to finally perform in front of an audience all the more thrilling and worthwhile. That's the kind of attitude reverberating at Studio Zoom right now, as its 250 or so dancers prepare for the school's annual showcase.

Doodling dreams

Guru, Mika Apichatsakol, Published on 19/08/2016

» In the wake of news about a certain multinational corporation shamelessly stealing intellectual property from independent designers who weren't "big enough" to matter, we were reminded of why it's important to give artists our backing. So, we scoured the streets -- or more so the digital lanes of Facebook and Instagram -- for local imaginations worth following and getting to know. The result is an eclectic pick of illustrators and designers we think could very well be the next Jeepjeep, Wisut or Sundae Kids.

Through the Cracker Box

Guru, Mika Apichatsakol, Published on 20/05/2016

» Nova Contemporary Gallery's inaugural exhibition, "Today is the Day: The Proposition of our Future", is a poignant exposition on the aftermath of Fukushima, told collectively through the multimedia works of 10 artists. Renowned Japanese film artist Ryusuke Ito is among the batch of voices and contributes to the collection an evocative installation you'd need to appreciate for a few minutes from multiple angles. Originally titled "All Things Considered", Ito's piece is a video installation capturing a replica of the Fukushima Daiichi power plant's interior as well as the inside of a Japanese person's apartment -- seemingly tranquil, but in reality, narrative of livelihoods arrested by disaster.

It's Bungee, Babe

Guru, Mika Apichatsakol, Published on 13/05/2016

» You'd think that by now, with all the workout methods at our disposal, there isn't a muscle we haven't used. As a regular gym-goer and dedicated dabbler of fitness fads, I thought so -- until I signed up for a bungee dance class.
