Modern Shanghai

Life, Published on 18/05/2015

» People are remembered for a variety of reasons, often for a single feat. A colleague recalls a brief acquaintance because they'd gone to a night spot and the fellow downed a case of beer. They've long-since parted company, but when the name happens to come up, so too does the memory.

Snowden under siege

Life, Kong Rithdee, Published on 27/03/2015

» The Oscar-winning Citizenfour has opened in Bangkok. An opportune cinema experience here in our land of 99.9% democracy where the contentious Cyber Security Bills are being revised, the so-called Edward Snowden documentary seethes with unsettling power. Its civic outrage is strong, but the cool-headed storytelling gives it gravity. The immediacy of the issue at its heart is also the debate of the early 21st century. And if the film lets us know from the start that it's taking the side of the whistle-blower, all the better.

Uploading the Korean dream

Life, Onsiri Pravattiyagul, Published on 27/03/2015

» Nathamon "Nutty" Kongjak was only seven minutes late, but she apologised profusely, to the point of mutual embarrassment. For a net idol with 3 million followers, and a budding artist who has just released an album in Korea, Power Of Nutty, there's something disarming about Nathamon, especially when the general consensus of net idols and K-pop stars tends to lean on the negative side.

Philosophy of design

Life, Pimrapee Thungkasemvathana, Published on 23/03/2015

» English designer, sculptor and architect Thomas Heatherwick established the Heatherwick Studio in 1994. He created the Rolling Bridge at Paddington Basin in London, on his own volition. He reinvented the iconic red London bus, down to the fabric for the seats, treating the interior of the bus like an architectural space. Heatherwick then went on to represent his homeland with the design of the UK Pavilion at the Shanghai Expo in 2010 — the Seed Cathedral, a hairy rectangular structure made with 60,000 identical clear acrylic rods, which created a curvaceous geometric interior space holding 250,000 seed samples. Sunlight travelled through the length of each rod, lighting up the space, and cast different hues throughout the day.

Dazzling, dreamlike Cinderella

Life, Parisa Pichitmarn, Published on 13/03/2015

» Good old storytelling and a bit of magic is what Disney does best (and should stick to). Let's all just sit back and be dreamy-eyed for a change — everything the Mouse House has churned out with a try-hard dark twist was terribly bland and forgettable (ahem, Alice In Wonderland) — or, in Maleficent's case, like watching an hour-long advertisement for Angelina Jolie.

An honest lawyer

Life, Bernard Trink, Published on 26/01/2015

» This reviewer doesn't know how good a lawyer John Grisham is. Certainly he's no Clarence Darrow, whose winning cases are still talked about a century later. But Darrow didn't pen courtroom dramas, while Grisham does. Many other lawyers do too, with Grisham's regarded, critically and popularly, as the pick of the crop.
