Concrete jungle

Guru, Jarupat Buranastidporn, Published on 05/09/2014

» Living in Bangkok is like eating a durian — you either love it or hate it, but it's usually smelly. There are those who are Bangkok-born and bred and those who have travelled thousands of miles to live in the so-called City of Angels (or #CityofSelfies, which seems more appropriate nowadays). Don't be fooled by the beautiful temples and overpopulation of 7-Elevens, as living here is not easy and it takes a lot more than an ability to eat spicy food and knowing the BTS map by heart to be called a Bangkokian. Here are some tell-tale signs that you have what it takes to survive the city.

Change-makers

» Recently the BTS launched a campaign to encourage Thais to start using escalators properly. Y’know, walk on the left side or stay on the right if you want to stand still. While we’re at it, we think they should discourage people from hugging the centre poles between their buttocks unless they’re strippers (go to fb.com/ohmysat to see what we’re talking about).

Splish splash

Guru, Pornchai Sereemongkonpol, Published on 11/04/2014

» There was a fuss made recently over a report that a company planned to organise Songkran celebrations in Singapore. Like a motorcycle taxi’s seat pre-heated by the April midday sun, this prompted some Thais to be extra protective of what they considered exclusive to Thailand. However, we need not worry about anyone copying our Songkran since we have many elements that are so inimitable that no other country would be able to (or want to) recreate them. In honour of the upcoming Thai New Year, we present you with all the things that make Songkran uniquely Thai.

Funny or flippant?

Guru, Pornchai Sereemongkonpol, Published on 21/03/2014

» Thais are sanook people. We like to have fun and don’t take things too seriously. Although we here at Guru all enjoy off-colour jokes every now and then, there’s a fine line between making light of someone or something and getting a laugh, or doing the same but drawing a big “boo”. This week, we examine five of the most controversial flippant actions that took place in Thailand. Judge for yourself whether they went too far.

Playing with contradictions

Life, Amitha Amranand, Published on 28/11/2013

» Despite their metallic grey sheen, their shapes and details clearly indicated their roots _ khon. Looking closer, however, and instead of the usual full, growling faces of the khon demons, the cheeks and eyes of these masks designed by Anuthep Potchprasart resembled those of a skeleton. The first few notes plucked from the traditional Chinese guqin zither unfolded an ominous blanket over the show.
