Cold relief

Guru, Eric E Surbano, Published on 26/03/2021

» T he sun has started to bear down a little more heavily these days. Brief walks to the 7-Eleven are starting to result in sweaty shirts. The cool, billowing breeze from an AC turned down to 10C degrees is starting to feel a little more pleasant than before. Brace yourselves: the onset of summer is here. What better way to alleviate the summer heat than perhaps a cool, refreshing dessert? Okay, ice cream is great no matter what season (I'd eat it even if it was winter. Then again, Bangkok doesn't really have "winter"). But you know what's better than delectable ice cream during the ridiculously hot Bangkok summer? Delectable ice cream that's delivered right to your doorstep during the ridiculously hot Bangkok summer! Here are some cool ice cream places you can order from to give you some sweet, delicious summer relief.

Classic British

Guru, Eric E Surbano, Published on 13/11/2020

» Though Britain is known for giving us the Spice Girls and 007, it's safe to say that nothing beats what they've given the culinary world: the simple yet delectable fish and chips. They're not necessarily difficult to find here but a few places serve their "version" which is a far cry from traditional fish and chips. Fortunately, I've found two places that won't disappoint.

» T hough vegan restaurants aren't difficult to find in Bangkok, finding delicious and a good variety of vegan food is difficult. Thankfully, Bangkok City Diner has jumped into the fray. Leave all assumptions about veganism at the door. They will be obliterated.

Juicy, juicy buns

Guru, Eric E Surbano, Published on 21/02/2020

» A famous "poet" once said, "I don't want none unless you got buns, hon." I changed it up a bit to make it a little more PG but the adage rings true, and Better Burger is serving up hamburgers complete with soft buns, great flavour and incredibly juicy patties.

From Italy with love

Guru, Eric E Surbano, Published on 07/02/2020

» It seems a little odd when you first glimpse the exterior of the resto because you would think it was a legit Italian osteria found on the side of a cobbled road. But then you take a look around and realise you're in CentralWorld. Walking in, the resto does a great job of making you feel as if you are in Italy. While they do sell pizzas and other things to go at the entrance, going inside for a proper meal is where it's at because not only does the ambience transport you but so does the food.

Welcoming a new decade!

Guru, Eric E Surbano, Published on 03/01/2020

» For those of you who may have missed it, we are in a new decade. Yes, you read that right. No, you are not hallucinating. Yes, we are all old. Welcome to the beginning of the 2020s where films like Back To The Future and Blade Runner are not just classics but the future worlds depicted in them are now effectively in the past; where years like 2050 and 2060 no longer sound ridiculous like they did back in the early 2000s and where those born in 2000 are 20 years old. It's a lot to take in, that's for sure. With every new year also comes the declarations of "New year, new me" posted all over social media and vocally announced at dinner tables everywhere. Resolutions are made and kept for a good two weeks or so before being thrown out the window. So instead of trying to expect things to happen that we aren't even sure will happen, let's take a look at the stuff that we're fairly certain will happen this year. Here's a couple of things to look forward to this 2020.

The (sand)wiching hour

Guru, Eric E Surbano, Published on 18/10/2019

» It eludes me why many think sandwiches can't be a meal. Perhaps it's because the sandwiches we know are the ones bought at a convenience store, which have been refrigerated, then squished under a toaster for a maximum of three minutes and voila, you've got yourself a "sandwich" with barely anything in between. Notice the quotation marks? These "sandwiches" are a sorry excuse of a "sandwich". Fortunately, Bangkok is home to a number of places that does sandwiches properly -- sandwiches that will not just have you filled and satisfied but also have you coming back for more. If you want to get away from the usual rice and noodles, it may be time to jump on the bread wagon. Here are a few of the best sandwich places around the city.

Lick good

Guru, Eric E Surbano, Published on 27/09/2019

» In the day and age of convenience and apps, it's so easy to get everything with just a simple click, so much so that perhaps the only thing we complain about now is the fact that we have to walk outside to meet the delivery guy. Not that we need anymore reason to stay inside (as if an introvert like me is trying to find reasons to go out and socialise), Lick BKK could probably be another incentive to simply lock yourself in a room as you chow down on their signature offering -- burgers. And who doesn't love being antisocial while scarfing down a good burger anyway?

Simple is the way to go

Guru, Eric E Surbano, Published on 16/08/2019

» In a day and age where gimmicks and twists are no longer uncommon in the culinary world, we find ourselves in an ironic state where we now actively seek out simple yet delicious dishes. I'm not saying evolved dishes aren't any good, but nowadays simple is the way to go. Easy Burger, which you can probably already tell by its name, pretty much sticks to that concept. There's no crazy recipe or ingredients. It's a straight-up classic burger ready for you to enjoy -- and it is enjoyable.
