» To bid farewell to Bang Khun Phrom Palace before its closure, hundreds of Thais queued and waited eagerly for one last visit to the handsome palace every Saturday morning throughout last month. The palace was once home to Marshal-Admiral Prince Paribatra Sukhumbhand of Nagor Svarga (1881-1944), and later served as a public museum under the supervision of the Bank of Thailand.

This is the time of mourning, but there is a centuries-old tradition of the royal court to host festivities on the occasion of a royal funeral. A wide range of majestic performances will grace the stages from 6pm on the royal cremation day until early the following morning.

» Every Saturday morning, hundreds of people form a long queue for a visit to Bang Khun Phrom Palace. Once the home of Marshal-Admiral Prince Paribatra Sukhumbhand of Nagor Svarga (1881-1944) and now the Bank of Thailand Museum, the handsome residence has become a new attraction that draws huge interest of cultural tourists, local and international. Some of the visitors are late to the queue and have to return on another Saturday, since only 400 tickets are issued each day. From last month until the end of this year, the palace, normally open to group visits only, welcomes the public on an individual basis for the first time in decades.

» Not many people know that Phaya Mangrai, a great warrior king, had founded a few other cities before establishing Nopburi Sri Nakhon Ping (the present-day Chiang Mai) as the centre of the Lanna Empire. Evidence is clear in the cases of the Chiang Saen and Wiang Kum Kam ancient cities in Chiang Rai and Chiang Mai respectively. Traces of another ancient city, Fang, have been found in the forms of city walls, pottery and an inscription. The new discovery holds historical significance and is hoped to attract cultural tourists.

» To disseminate knowledge of archaeology for conserving historic sites and to ensure the fine mutual existence of humans and ancient sites, the Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn Anthropology Centre and the French School of Asian Studies (EFEO) will host a photo exhibition and academic seminar entitled "People And Ancient Sites" at the centre in Taling Chan district, Bangkok, Nov 3-23.

But caretakers also want it to be recognised as a learning centre and this has led to the project that opens the Archive Room to the public in conjunction with two art exhibitions that will run through next January.
