» Next Friday will mark the Makha Bucha, also known as Magha Puja Day, another important day for Buddhists. It falls on the Full Moon day of the third lunar month in which 1,250 enlightened monks (or arahant) gathered to listen to Buddha teach his principles known as Ovadha Patimokha more than 2,500 years ago. The teaching roughly consists of three major concepts: do good, abstain from bad action and purify the mind.

» The pictures of people kayaking and paddle boarding along Klong Ong Ang were still vivid in my memory. The activity was organised in the middle of this month to promote the canal makeover as well as Klong Ong Ang Walking Street. The photos triggered me to visit the site to see if the canal's water was clean enough for people to kayak or if I could find anyone doing so during my visit last Saturday.

Phuket gears up for 9-day vegetarian festival

» The annual vegetarian festival will get under way between the first to the ninth day of the ninth lunar month in the Chinese calendar. This year, it will fall between Oct 17-25 and celebrations have been organised in many places including Bangkok, Pattaya, Suphan Buri, Nakhon Sawan, Takua Pa in Phangnga and Hat Yai. The highlight will be a grand celebration in Phuket, believed to be the origin of the vegetarian festival in Thailand.

Pattaya braces for slow reopening

» The sky over Pattaya beach in Chon Buri was cloudy. The wind was mild and pleasant. At midday, the sunshine was not that strong. Out in the sea, kids screamed and laughed while playing with waves. A few banana boats and jet skis waited for customers.

Sleepy community wakes up

» Folding doors of wooden shophouses gradually opened as morning came. Some shop owners arranged their shelves and filled the space with packages of snacks, daily-use products, and even postcards, while some others prepared their cooking tools to make noodles and hot meals. Coffee shops started to turn on soft music.

Snow business in Korea

» Darkness swiftly enveloped the orange sky after dusk. Yellow lights came on up and down the mountainside, illuminating the ski slopes. The temperature, which had been 2C in the afternoon, dropped to a bone-chilling -8C at night. The freezing weather discouraged me from leaving my warm room, but there were plenty of hardy souls out enjoying some late-night skiing.
