LIFE

Noodle over noodles

Guru, Pornchai Sereemongkonpol, Published on 02/10/2015

» If you've spent as much time eating noodles as we have, you probably have wondered what it's like to put fusilli in your kuay tiew. If so, you're in luck because 1000 Zen has done those edible experiments for you already, saving you trial and error and a possible bad stomach. 1000 Zen -- a play on the Thai word sen, or "thread" in English -- lets customers choose what to put in their bowls, with multiple options of noodles, toppings and soups. After the success of its first branch in Ari, a second opened in the Sathon area two months ago. We stopped by to play god with noodle dishes. The shop looks like a café on the outside and tries to make up for its small space with floor-to-ceiling windows and mirrored walls. But during lunchtime, customers will literally be rubbing shoulders.

K-pot

» At the risk of making a lame analogy, you may find it hard to say what you like best in a Korean hotpot, much like picking your favourite member of a K-pop band, given the various choices put together. Officially opened last week, The Red Sun specialises in hotpots with tokpokki (spicy rice cakes). The new restaurant looks like a cool greenhouse where you can sit under a tree in the comfort of AC but don’t have to worry about leaves falling into your food. There are instructions on how to tend to your hotpot properly on the paper placemats but, better yet, you can just wait for an attentive waiter to cook things for you. On our visit, groups of office workers and students were there to gang up on these red hotpots.

Taste and table

» Sukhumvit is a hub of hotel dining with many options to choose from. Opened on May 1, Radisson Blu Plaza Bangkok is the new kid on the block and currently offers five restaurants and bars (with two more to come), one of which is China Table. With many sqms and a ceiling high enough to even accommodate a lion dance, the restaurant exudes a spacious and airy feel, befitting a special lunch or dinner event more than a normal meal. It has a good yin-yang design that offers Chinese flair without being too gaudy. Natural light floods the space, brightening up vases, urns and tea sets on shelves as well as other impressive decor details. Get comfy on the plush couch or sit on a high chair from where you can view traditional tea making. The majority of patrons are Asian tourists and expats.

Lakorn Love

Guru, Pornchai Sereemongkonpol, Published on 21/06/2013

» Lakorn, popular Thai TV soap operas, are a national pastime enjoyed by many. Even if you're not a fan, you won't be able to escape them with your friends confessing their love for phra ek (male lead) on Facebook daily, or the recapping of last night's episode at lunch. There's no denying that lakorn are an unshakable part of contemporary Thai culture. Since you can't avoid them, we here at Guru have come up with some lakorn-inspired games that all can enjoy. We have also dug up some unbelievable facts and drama that surround the cultural staple.

Street cart Charisma

» There are tons of roadside food vendors in this city which explains why Bangkokians can eat around the clock (ruining any chance of diets). So it should be considered nothing less than a feat if one shop can stand out amidst the sea of street eateries. Well, you're in luck, because we've found four vendors that have managed to cook up ways to get noticed and attract the crowd. Here's what they have to say about their unique businesses.

Eye-popping Chinese

Guru, Pornchai Sereemongkonpol, Published on 20/07/2012

» Mandopop is a term for Mandarin popular music (rather than pop music performed by men or by using mandolins). It's a subcategory that falls under C-pop, or commercial Chinese language music, and is popular in China (duh), Taiwan, Japan, Malaysia and Singapore. Think Andy Lau, Leehom Wang and Jay Chou. It's also the name of a new entry to Bangkok's fine dining scene that is set to popularise Chinese cuisine with modern flair.

Double Lives

» Not everything is what it seems when it comes to defining someone by their occupation. For example, Itthipat Kulapongvanich made some serious cash by selling online game items before he became the CEO of seaweed enterprise Taokaenoi. Pleum Leekpai is the energetic, funny and politically incorrect co-host of TV show VRZO but he also wore a tie and looked professional during his time as an assistant to a Ministry of Culture spokesperson. And even Superman works as a reporter named Clark Kent when he isn't fighting villains and saving the world.

Piecing it together

Guru, Pornchai Sereemongkonpol, Published on 18/05/2012

» If we were to see the world like a child, we would realise there are so many unanswered questions staring us right in the face; at restaurants, on the street, pretty much everywhere we look. But don't fret, as we've done some digging and tackled questions you have never even thought to ask. Here are the little-known origins of eight things to bore your date or people at a party with. Don't say we never teach you anything.
