» After lunch, I parked my car at Vana Nava Hua Hin water park, a new attraction in the beachside city. Glad to see the parking lot was only half full, I hoped to roam around easily and enjoy the exciting water slides.

The bright sunlight is no deterrent for some tourists who roam happily along the beach, enjoying the occasional breeze as they wade into the turquoise-coloured water. » After an afternoon of roaming the bustling back lanes of Kunming, capital of China's Yunnan province, I was relieved to come across a bench next to some flower beds. Grateful for an opportunity to take the weight off my feet, I sat there contentedly, shortly before dusk, observing the congestion as hundreds of motorcycles, electric scooters, buses and cars crawled past, the noise level suggesting that all the drivers were leaning on their horns at the same time.

» Cycling through the historic centre of Chiang Mai is a good deal easier than trying to get around by car. Compared to nearby neighbourhoods like Tha Phae or Huay Kaew, the streets in the old quarter are usually very quiet and a journey on two wheels within the square-shaped area enclosed by the old city moat rarely takes more than 15 minutes. Riding a bicycle is also more convenient (no need to fight for parking spaces) and much cheaper than taking the local form of public transport, the red song taew with its flat rate of 20 baht per passenger.

» On a country road, I make my way past vast rice paddies that extend all the way to the horizon. Except for a few thatched-roof huts under the shade of a Mon-style golden pagoda, there is nothing else to interrupt the stunning view. It is close to harvest season and the fields are turning gold. Such impressive scenery reminds me of the word "Suvannabhumi", the golden land in Southeast Asia mentioned in records more than 2,500 years ago.

» Hundreds of passengers quietly hang around Bangkok's Hua Lamphong station. Some have waited for so long that they decide to sit on the floor because all the benches are occupied. Maids take a break and enjoy chatting in a quiet corner, out of their supervisor's sight.
