Saigon didn't fall

Life, Pongpet Mekloy, Published on 15/10/2015

» Sixty-one years after liberation from French control and four decades since the fall of Saigon in 1975, less than two years after the US troops were forced to go home, the former capital of Cochinchina during the colonial period and later of South Vietnam continues to be one of the country's most vibrant cities. Did Saigon actually fall? Maybe not.

Getting lost with my best friend

Life, Pongpet Mekloy, Published on 10/09/2015

» Travelling is never boring if you are accompanied by your best friend. That's why I often bring my bike along on road trips. Recently, on the way back from Mukdahan, the northeastern city on the border with Laos, I spared a half-day to explore Phu Mhu, a hill with scenic lookout points in Nikhom Kham Soi, which is just a short drive from the provincial capital, with my two-wheeled buddy.

Hitting the G-spot

Life, Pongpet Mekloy, Published on 30/07/2015

» The famous beach resort of Hua Hin is one of my most frequented destinations for mountain biking. With four regularly maintained downhill tracks, Khao Hin Lek Fai which stands just west of the downtown area boasts more DH trails than any other hill of its size in Thailand. On my latest trip there, the local downhillers refused to bring me to our favourite trails. The reason being that there was, again, a brand new one, and they insisted I had to try it. Of course, I readily agreed. Why not?

But the southern province still holds many lesser known, and surprising, gems. Today let's explore one of them together by bike.

Rough terrain

» Khao Lampi – Hat Thai Muang National Park of Phangnga province is so named because it covers two separate areas, Thai Muang beach on the coastline and Lampi mountain further inland on the other side of Highway 4. Our destination today is the park's western part, which is basically a huge sand dune that extends northward from near the town of Thai Muang to a hill called Khao Na Yak.

Fangs for the memories

Life, Pongpet Mekloy, Published on 05/03/2015

» Recently, on my way back from Chiang Mai I decided to extend my road trip for another day so I could explore Mon Phya Chae. Discovering this hill in Lampang, which is a popular site for mountain bike competitions, however, instantly made me feel regret and hate myself.
