» Not many people know that Phaya Mangrai, a great warrior king, had founded a few other cities before establishing Nopburi Sri Nakhon Ping (the present-day Chiang Mai) as the centre of the Lanna Empire. Evidence is clear in the cases of the Chiang Saen and Wiang Kum Kam ancient cities in Chiang Rai and Chiang Mai respectively. Traces of another ancient city, Fang, have been found in the forms of city walls, pottery and an inscription. » Thon Buri, the portion of Bangkok lying on the west bank of the Chao Phraya River, is widely known for its scenic waterways, historic temples, diverse culture and many culinary delicacies. A study, carried out by the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration’s Department of City Planning in 2012, listed 452 Buddhist temples in the capital, including 211 in Thon Buri. A self-designed walking trip, inspired by a trip led by culture expert Chulapassorn Panomvan Na Ayudhya, allowed us to explore six temples in the Thon Buri district of Bangkok Noi, most of which are in a sub-district called Bang Khun Non.

» When it comes to sightseeing, most visitors to Bangkok think only about places in the heart of the city, such as the Temple of the Emerald Buddha, Temple of the Reclining Buddha or the Temple of Dawn. Many cultural attractions in the suburbs are also worth exploring. People use the Bangkok-Chon Buri motorway as a shortcut to the eastern provinces, not realising that every time they whizz along this convenient artery they are bypassing some hidden gems.

» If Bangkok-based tourists have a free day to visit nearby provinces besides the perennially popular Ayutthaya, Chon Buri or Phetchaburi, Saraburi's Muak Lek district and the adjacent Pak Chong district of Nakhon Ratchasima are among good choices, especially during the cool season. Both districts are well-known for their lush scenery, variety of attractions and proximity to the capital.

A capital adventure

» River breeze and morning sunlight softly touched our skin while a large group of Thai tourists were cruising on the Irrawaddy River. We had left the old Myanmar capital of Mandalay and were bound for three other major cities. The trip centred on Thai art in Myanmar, along with other famous cultural attractions. The art is believed to have been the work of Siamese war prisoners brought to Myanmar after the fall of Ayutthaya in 1767, and their descendants.
