» After retiring as a school teacher two years ago, Wilai Kampilool, now 62, spends his time farming. His house is located in Ban Sok Nak, in tambon Hin Lek Fai in Buri Ram's Khu Muang district. The village has recently become a destination for those who want to learn about or see ganja (marijuana) plants.

» Under a raised-floor wooden house in Chiang Mai, Nuansri Promjai, 63, warmly welcomes guests to her home. She wears a hemp blouse and harem pants that she designed and knitted herself, a hobby that has been her leisure interest since childhood. Over the past 36 years, she has turned her passion to a profession. Currently, she creates jobs for more than a hundred women including the elderly in her community of Ban Huai Sai in Mae Rim district.

» The road leading to Ban Neon Kum in Bang Krathum district in Phitsanulok is quiet. Along the road are farmlands consisting mostly of banana plantations. For more than a century, locals in Bang Krathum have grown the fruit for producing sun-dried bananas -- known as kluay tak in Thai. Kluay tak is a Geographical Indication (GI) product of Bang Krathum. About 4,000 tonnes of kluay tak are produced yearly.

The three-day fair with a 20 million baht investment attracted not only those who have experience in using weed but also people who were sick and wanted to use medical marijuana as well as people from many parts of the country, policemen, soldiers (both in uniform and undercover) as well as foreigners.

But realising the gradually shifting tide, Rangsit University founded the Medical Cannabis Research Team last year in the hope of securing scientific proof on the medical benefits of cannabis -- and, pending a possible law change, to bring it back to Thai medicine for the first time in centuries.
