Route to pay your respects

Life, Kaona Pongpipat, Published on 18/10/2016

» It is a time of grief as the nation mourns the passing of His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej last Thursday. Since last week, thousands of Thais have flocked daily, braving the scorching sun or heavy rain, to pay their respects before a portrait of His Majesty the King at the Sala Sahathai Samakhom Pavilion inside the Grand Palace, while His Majesty is lying in state at the Dusit Maha Prasart Throne Hall.

(Authorised) art attack

Life, Kaona Pongpipat, Published on 20/01/2016

» Around this time in 2014, the late artist Mamafaka's one-eyed gigantic monster Mr. HellYeah, spray-painted at the ruins near BTS Ratchathewi, was "bombed" by another graffiti group. The original graffiti was done as part of the first edition of street art festival Bukruk in 2013, and when the controversy about it being defaced erupted, the unauthorised vandalism of the authorised vandalism exemplied the very essence of street art: nothing is permanent.

Garden and Bridge Art Space, near BTS Saphan Taksin.

A monthly column rounding up the best of the capital’s art scene

» At Yet-Space, there was fried chicken which looked like KFC but tasted worse. At Speedy Grandma, the hipsters, as usual, seemed perfectly fine with Asahi draught as their sole sustenance. At Bangkok University Gallery there was food but I wasn't there in time to see what it was. In this month's column, which rounds up the best food served in the capital's art scene, The Jam Factory Gallery was a sure winner.

Staging an LGBT revolution

» It all started one day in July, when Sun Tawalwongsri visited Silom Society coffee shop and saw empty space on the fifth floor and rooftop, with BTS Skytrains passing by. Just a few months later, the veteran director, actor and choreographer established the appropriately named Sun Dance Theatre. The theatre is now celebrating its launch with The 1st Bangkok Queer Theatre Festival, which began last week and will continue until the end of year with six productions from five directors.
