LIFE

A walk through history

Life, Pongpet Mekloy, Published on 31/10/2019

» Across the Chao Phraya River from Chinatown are old neighbourhoods steeped in history. Over a hundred years ago, one of them was the home and playground of a goldsmith's daughter who decades later become the mother of two beloved monarchs. But the late Princess Srinagarindra was not the only historical figure who once called this area home.

Only the fun counts

Life, Pongpet Mekloy, Published on 03/08/2017

» Some people keep count of how many provinces they have visited. I used to do that too, when I was 25 years younger. Then one day I quit, not because I had travelled to too many places to remember, but because I came to realise that there is no point in continuing the practice. Even if you've set foot on all of Thailand's 77 provinces, it doesn't mean that you've seen all of this country.

» Wat Phra Bat Tak Pha, which houses revered Buddha footprint sculptures, is the famous religious site for Lamphun's Pa Sang district. Blazing a new trail

» As long as the world continues to revolve, things will never stop changing, for the worse or for the better. The first time I visited Mo Hin Khao, the hill in Chaiyaphum province famous for groups of awe-inspiring boulders, it was kind of a remote site accessible only by a dirt track. That was in 2007, which was not that long ago. Recently, however, I returned there, only to find that the "natural site" now has a feel of a highway petrol station, minus the gas pumps.

» The mighty Mekong marks the border between Thailand's northeastern region and Laos. With the second Thai-Lao Friendship Bridge providing a land link since 2006, the town of Mukdahan has served as a convenient gateway from Thailand to the Lao town of Savannakhet on the other side of the river.

Saigon didn't fall

Life, Pongpet Mekloy, Published on 15/10/2015

» Sixty-one years after liberation from French control and four decades since the fall of Saigon in 1975, less than two years after the US troops were forced to go home, the former capital of Cochinchina during the colonial period and later of South Vietnam continues to be one of the country's most vibrant cities. Did Saigon actually fall? Maybe not.

An accidental cycling superstar

Peak practice

» Those who have visited the famous scenic lookout point of Huai Nam Dang National Park, which straddles the border between Chiang Mai and Mae Hong Son, must find it hard to forget the magnificent panorama of an endless mountainous landscape, a dreamlike scene especially early in the morning when the ridges are obscured by the expansive sea of fog bathed in early morning sunshine.

Creature (dis)comforts of going solo

Life, Pongpet Mekloy, Published on 15/03/2012

» Before I took up mountain biking about a decade ago, trekking was my passion. I'd been to quite a number of natural sites across the Kingdom and knew that some would be fun destinations to return to one day with my bike. Kadangla waterfall in Phetchaburi province was one such place.
