Monstrously addictive

Life, Kanin Srimaneekulroj, Published on 07/02/2018

» Despite seeing dozens of titles released under the name since its initial debut in 2004, Capcom's Monster Hunter -- the Japanese studio's famed action-RPG franchise -- has never been a mainstream hit. With its admittedly repetitive gameplay loop, nail-biting difficulty and archaic controls, Monster Hunter is one of those games that you either love to death or avoid entirely, with no room in between.

Stone on Snowden

Life, Kanin Srimaneekulroj, Published on 07/10/2016

» Director Oliver Stone likes to tell stories of larger-than-life characters. Or not just characters, but real people caught up in the swirl of American history, which is sometimes to say world history: John F. Kennedy in JFK (1991); Jim Morrison in The Doors (1991); Richard Nixon in Nixon (1995); Fidel Castro in Commandante (2003); Alexander the Great in Alexander (2005); and George W Bush in W (2008). The fuzzy line between glory and shame of American policy is also his favourite subject, such as in the Vietnam War-set Platoon (1986), Wall Street (1987), Born On The Fourth Of July (1989) and World Trade Center (2006).

Beast of a political drama

» Ignore the giant, alien-looking kaiju on the film's posters; Shin Gojira (known in English as Godzilla Resurgence), a remake of the iconic 1954 film, is very much a relatively grounded political drama, trading in the spectacular giant-monster battles we've grown to expect of modern kaiju films for a more deliberate exploration of real-world politics, where indecision, unilateral national agendas and complicated bureaucratic protocols kill more innocent civilians than the titular kaiju ever could on its own.

Drawing a perfect Thailand

Life, Kanin Srimaneekulroj, Published on 19/10/2015

» 'Everyone is 'drawing' the future," said Charan Homtienthong, president of the Publishers and Booksellers Association of Thailand (Pubat). "In this time of change and new beginnings, Thai people should start thinking about and working towards the vision of what Thailand should be, and to 'draw' the picture of a perfect Thailand."

Pales in comparison to the original

Life, Kanin Srimaneekulroj, Published on 04/09/2015

» The original The Transporter series will always have a place in my heart as one of the most entertaining action flicks of all time. Jason Statham's portrayal of the mysterious Frank Martin appealed to me with his deadpan humour and silent, threatening stares, not to mention his borderline mythic skills with the wheel.
