LIFE

The sensation of all senses

Life, Parisa Pichitmarn, Published on 07/09/2018

» 'Do you like The Beatles?" is one of the first questions Maribel asks me during our consultation before the treatment starts. "Well, even if you don't, you don't have a choice. You'll just have to listen to it anyway," she quips.

From the Big Apple to the Big Mango

» It's all been there done that on the Cannes Lion advertising award circuit for Kantapon Metheekul. The young creative executive has won many awards, been featured in several publications and has illustrated for a handful of high street and luxury fashion brands -- but that's not his true calling. As someone who loved to draw since he was five, it was only natural that Kantapon's veins throbbed to become a full-time artist -- to draw his own creations and not what others briefed him to. After three years of working for advertising agencies, he packed his bags and headed to New York to become an artist.

Shopping with all your senses

» It feels like there is an Hour Glass store at practically every main street corner in Singapore, but the Hour Glass store that rules them all is situated on Bideford Road, just off Orchard and right next to Paragon. Fashioned under the name Malmaison and having sat at that location since 2011, the opulent enclave of 745m² is largely under the radar to the common pedestrian, despite the fact that what is housed inside could well become your most lush watch-buying experience ever. Even a local tour guide confirms that most Singaporeans are oblivious to the lavish encounter that awaits inside.

Hearts and friendships

» A Karan Johar film usually offers promises of glamorous locales, impossibly beautiful leads, cameos of his A-list buddies, over-the-top songs and what is supposed to be an atomic bomb of feel-goodism. He doesn't let you down within the departments of the first four, but Ae Dil Hai Mushkil (The Heart Is Complicated) is unlikely to stay with you the way his previous decade-defining works have. It's not as tear-jerking or heartwarming, but still does offer a great soundtrack that will cling to your mind unlike its messy plot. (Try keeping the waterworks in when Channa Mereya comes on. You won't.)

LIFE

A tribute to unsung heroes

Life, Parisa Pichitmarn, Published on 29/01/2016

» Yes. Finally an Akshay Kumar movie that you really cannot afford to miss. Loosely based on a true story almost lost in the sands of time that went by largely unreported, Airlift brings to life that believable kind of heroism only classics like Schindler's List have artfully managed to depict. Regardless of how true to historical details the movie is, its story of Indian refugees trapped in Kuwait after Saddam Hussein's troops attacked the country in 1990 packs an unforgettable punch.

Clean, lean and everything in between

» As a person who follows the self-sprinkled mantra of I-will-eat-whatever-the-hell-I-want, I have never been one to obsess over what I put into my mouth. If I want a cookie at midnight, with a side of chips, I am going to go stuff my face -- sans any guilt or calorie-counting. My heaven-sent gift of rapid-fire digestion is a side effect of being diagnosed with hyperthyroidism -- something that has unfortunately been slowing down since I have plummeted deeper into adulthood.

Simply dazzling

» Happy New Year is a big Indian celebration with the same sort of jokes, recycled moments and flamboyant sets and dance numbers, but still a big party nevertheless.

Kharma's gonna get you

Life, Parisa Pichitmarn, Published on 11/09/2013

» On the face of it, a subject as weighty as kharma wouldn't take too well to caricature, but the exhibition currently underway at Bangkok's 100 Tonson Gallery, "Karma Police", successfully creates a multicoloured luminosity from this seemingly heavy theme.

The best lessons are in a class of their own

Life, Parisa Pichitmarn, Published on 10/01/2013

» With the audacious daydream that I might be able to change the world through one kid at a time, I tutor during the weekends. I honestly really fear for the future of (Thai) mankind, so I drag myself out of bed every Sunday morning and try to give my students what their clearly lacking schools fail to.
