Thailand's most unlikely A-list celebrity

Oped, Roger Crutchley, Published on 22/09/2024

» Unless you have been in hibernation for the past few weeks you may have noticed that making the news has been the two-month-old female pygmy hippopotamus Moo Deng (Bouncy Pork) which has been attracting large crowds to Khao Kheow Open Zoo in Chon Buri. The little hippo, which acquired its name due to its "bouncy" behaviour has become an internet celebrity and indeed, an international star. She even made a guest appearance on the BBC World news.

Sharing good times and hard times

Roger Crutchley, Published on 06/08/2023

» Earlier this week the Bangkok Post marked its 77th anniversary which is quite an achievement really considering what the country has experienced since the newspaper was established in 1946. Any paper that has displayed such longevity, surviving countless coups and assorted other upheavals deserves a nod of acknowledgement.

Foreign noses always good for a laugh

News, Roger Crutchley, Published on 19/12/2021

» Today's column is coming from the northeastern province of Chaiyaphum to where I periodically escape for a break from Bangkok. There was a quick reminder that I was no longer in the Big Mango while sitting in a village restaurant with my wife and friends. A Thai lad about 5 years old came up to our table and stared at me for a bit and giggled. I might add this is not an unusual reaction to Crutch in the provinces.

The eyes have it in the big cover-up

News, Roger Crutchley, Published on 09/05/2021

» Coming from our Not Particularly Surprising News Department is a report that owing to the Covid pandemic lipstick sales have slumped quite markedly. With most people wearing masks there seems little point for the ladies to bother with lipstick.

It could be fun, in a strange sort of way

News, Roger Crutchley, Published on 10/01/2021

» A number of readers -- well, three -- have asked why last week's column did not contain the usual predictions for the coming year. My feeling at the time was that with the dark cloud of Covid-19 hovering over us it seemed a bit inappropriate to carry the usual frivolous PostScript predictions. However, I have had a change of heart and considering we are only 10 days into the New Year it is not too late to make silly forecasts.

There's a beauty for every occasion

News, Roger Crutchley, Published on 16/12/2018

» Unless you have been in hibernation you will be aware that Thailand is currently hosting the 2018 Miss Universe contest which climaxes tomorrow at the less-than-entertaining hour of 7am, presumably to cater to primetime audiences in the United States.

Once it was almost a botanical garden

News, Roger Crutchley, Published on 18/11/2018

» About 20 years ago I was standing on the steps of the British ambassador's residence in Bangkok after interviewing England and Manchester United football legend Sir Bobby Charlton. Shameless name-dropping again, l know, but there is a point. While we were waiting for transport, Sir Bobby surveyed the embassy grounds and remarked what an idyllic scene it was, with all the trees, ponds and well-manicured lawns. He was definitely impressed. With traffic gridlock only a stone's throw away, it was a truly tranquil oasis presided over with aplomb by the statue of Queen Victoria.

Not in front of the children, if you please

News, Roger Crutchley, Published on 06/12/2015

» December is the time of the year when awards are handed out for novels and other literary efforts. However, there is one prize that most authors would rather not win — the Bad Sex in Fiction Award.

Remembering the first tabloid strip queen

News, Roger Crutchley, Published on 01/02/2015

» Following last week’s column concerning premature reports of the demise of The Sun’s Page 3 girls, it seems only fair to point out the noble deeds of an ageless beauty who appeared in a rival tabloid in a different era.

No sex please, we’re in sin-free Pattaya

News, Roger Crutchley, Published on 07/09/2014

» One can only wish the authorities, who last week announced plans to turn Pattaya from “Sin City” into a family-oriented paradise, the best of luck. They are definitely going to need it.
