Once bitten, Twice shy

Guru, Jarupat Buranastidporn, Published on 18/03/2016

» With Thai celebrities and their friends backing the brand, it wasn't much of a surprise to see long queues outside of the Bake Cheese Tart stall when it first opened. Three months down the line and surprise, surprise, there wasn't a single line to be seen. Despite all the hype it had created, it seems this little pop up (among many others) has fallen short of expectations.

Power up

Guru, Jarupat Buranastidporn, Published on 11/03/2016

» Last month we rushed to see Deadpool. This month it's all about Batman V Superman. And what's that we hear? X-Men: Apocalypse is coming in May? Our obsession with ridiculously chiseled people in capes, red underwear and crazy healing abilities never ceases. If you're wondering why none of these movies are ever based Bangkok, Dear Readers, it's because not everyone with super powers is suited for our beloved city.

Reviving the classics

Guru, Jarupat Buranastidporn, Published on 04/03/2016

» Dixielogy (fb.com/dixielogy) is an up-and-coming vintage jazz band that has quickly made a name for itself within Bangkok's bustling nightlife scene. Having headlined at Maggie Choo's and Brown Sugar, it's safe to say that its unique sound, inspired by dixieland and early styles of jazz, has received plenty of attention among jazz enthusiasts all over the city. Band members include Taweesak "Pipe" Booranapanitpan (clarinet), Watchara "Jeng" Atchariyavaranon (Trumpet), Panai "Pop" Imjai (banjo), Pawin "Win" Limkangvanmongkol (piano), Jutichoke "Junior" Assarasakorn (sousaphone) and Ben Poovaviranon (drums). Guru catches up with the group to find out what it's like for these affable musicians to bring back tunes from the 1910s and to swim against the tide of currently popular musical genres.

Pizza Massilia, all grown up

Guru, Jarupat Buranastidporn, Published on 26/02/2016

» Wander down Soi Ruam Rudee and you’re guaranteed to be extremely well-fed even before you hit its halfway point. But one can never have too many Italian joints, especially when you live in Bangkok. Thus, the recently opened Pizza Massilia Ruam Rudee was welcomed to the neighbourhood with open arms. It helps too, that the restaurant has already made a name for itself, dishing out great pizza during last year’s food truck boom. Its restaurant counterpart, though, is operating on a much larger scale, with more items on the menu and top-notch service in a striking locale with a late baroque interior and pastel hues. Visually stunning, the aesthetics take a pizzeria experience to the next level, as well as reflect the unique stance on cuisine.

Cards against Bangkokians

Guru, Jarupat Buranastidporn, Published on 19/02/2016

» If you’re familiar with this beautiful black box, it’s probably because you, like us, have an extremely dry and bitter sense of humour. Or you’re just a plain horrible person who has been to Game Over bar way too many times. Either way, you can’t deny the Cards Against Humanity’s popularity, with its added extension packs and a couple of international editions adding to the mayhem.

Cream of the cup

Guru, Jarupat Buranastidporn, Published on 19/02/2016

» In a sweltering city like Bangkok, there can never be too many ice cream joints — I’d be perfectly content if the government decided to replace every 7-Eleven with an ice cream parlour. Our continuous craving for gourmet desserts (be it genuine desire to satiate a sweet tooth or the never-ending search of Instagram gratification) means institutions such as Swensen’s and Haagen-Dazs no longer have quite the pull as they did 10 years ago. Instead, they have become something of a last resort, like when you find yourself stuck in an unfamiliar mall.

What's cooking, neighbour?

Guru, Jarupat Buranastidporn, Published on 05/02/2016

» After noticing a huge pool of culinary talent hidden in Bangkok's home kitchens — and a growing demand for authentic meals — Samuel Coizet and Pakki Sampataphakdee co-founded Kinkao (www.kinkao.co), an online platform that allows home chefs to cook and sell home-made meals to the people in their neighbourhoods. From Vietnamese to Mexican to Southern Thai, you can find nearly every type of cuisine on the website. We spoke with the founders about their endeavour.

Thong Lor to-do

Guru, Jarupat Buranastidporn, Published on 29/01/2016

» Let's start with what we love about hi-so stomping ground Thong Lor: Sightings of Ferraris revving their engines even though they're stuck in 10kph Friday traffic. The utter looks of disbelief of which only rich kids are capable, after they find out there's no valet parking. New bistros, the lifespan of which are approximately three-months before disappearing from the face of the Earth.

Where there's smoke...

Guru, Jarupat Buranastidporn, Published on 29/01/2016

» The set-up: If you need proof as to why Bangkok is just as deserving of the “foodie capital” title as Hong Kong and Singapore, pay Il Fumo at visit. Powerhouse trio Choti Leenutaphong, Debby Tang and chef Luca Appino, responsible for Bottega’s nostalgic comfort and exceeding our cocktail expectations at Vesper, are now making us swoon over charcoal-grilled and dry-aged beef.
