LIFE

Brunch, redefined

Guru, Jarupat Buranastidporn, Published on 08/05/2015

» Just when we thought Bangkok’s culinary scene had had enough of civilised brunches (seeing as how hordes of foodies have migrated to EmQuartier, where they queue up and chow down on all the latest fads), Taper opens its doors, with a surprising brunch concept in the middle of an eggs-Benedict-infested Thong Lor. Far from predictable, the dishes here are Asian-inspired and incorporate modern cooking techniques, which isn’t much of a surprise when you learn that the head chef has worked in the kitchen of Spice Market New York and is backed by the guys behind Le Du. The restaurant has two floors, and although space is a little tight, it isn’t prohibitively cramped. Seats at the counter offer the best view of the open kitchen. Or head upstairs, where proper tables are set out with chairs and couches perfect for relaxing.

Bangkok food fight

Guru, Jarupat Buranastidporn, Published on 08/05/2015

» As with the sweltering -- and constantly rising -- temperatures, Bangkok's culinary scene continues to expand (in direct proportion to the size of our bellies). You've seen the queues at snack shops currently on everyone's must eat" list. With so many of them around, it's a surprise we ever get anything done. But starve not dear readers, Guru has scoured the city to put some of the most raved about food items to the test.

Vends with benefits

Guru, Jarupat Buranastidporn, Published on 24/04/2015

» Sure, the multibillion-baht shopping malls blasting air-con at -2°C may keep the citizens of Bangkok occupied for a while. But like every fad that passes through the city, we all know that it’s not long before the queues disperse and we’re back at our usual som tam spot, ready for more uncontrollable sweating and potential food poisoning. Street stalls and vendors are inarguably the heart and soul of Bangkok -- frankly, we can’t imagine living here without them. This is Guru’s guide to the different types of vendors every Bangkokian needs to survive in the city.

Ebit of everything

Guru, Jarupat Buranastidporn, Published on 24/04/2015

» Moving away from sushi central (aka Thong Lor), this little Japanese place is injecting new energy into a dingy, once-popular community mall in Ekamai. Small, cosy and unfussed, Ebisu Sushi's bare walls and simple table settings reflect the owner's belief in showcasing quality food over fluff. The best view in the house is right in front of the counters, where you can watch sushi masters carefully preparing your dish, as well as take a peek at the fresh seafood on offer. The staff are well-trained, hospitable and can recommend dishes according to what fish are in season. Diners include young and hip locals, expats and Japanese families.

Get 'em wet!

Guru, Jarupat Buranastidporn, Published on 10/04/2015

» Hooray. It's that time of year again, when we once more get to throw gallons of water around and cause talcum powder-induced asthma attacks on as many tourists as we can. To make Songkran more fun, Guru has come up with a definitive guide on the different types of hydrophobes you'll see — and the ways to get them (after all, it's more entertaining than hosing down someone who's already soaked from head to toe). Lock 'n' load those water pistols and fill up them buckets, dear readers — we're comin' in hot!

Tricks of the traits

Guru, Jarupat Buranastidporn, Published on 27/03/2015

» Bangkokians are a rare — and confusing — breed. When the economy looks grim, we build more shopping malls. When there is a protest or coup, we turn it into a music festival. When there’s too much pollution, we suck it in like it’s the smell of fresh laundry. To be called a Bangkokian is something that must be earned. Residing around Sukhumvit and spending a quarter of your time stuck in traffic may score you a few points, but believe us, it takes a lot more than that before you can really embrace the status. But fear not, dear readers — Guru has compiled an instruction manual of the basic Bangkokian traits you need to grasp (or at least know about) to blend in with the locals.

(A)ppealing (B)runch and (C)offee

Guru, Jarupat Buranastidporn, Published on 27/03/2015

» Tucked away on the third floor of the newly opened 9:53 community mall in Thong Lor, this two-month-old all-day eatery offers more than the usual eggy brunch dishes. ABC Essence in Eatery is a brave black sheep grazing on a hill predominantly filled with Japanese restaurants, which should be a delight for the area's residents, who must be tired of having sushi first thing on a Sunday morning. With a clean-cut, white-walled interior, spanking new marble floors and Scandinavian furniture, it manages to pull off the "modern" look that seldom fails to please diners' eyes. You can expect to find Japanese housewives enjoying a lazy lunch, urbanites digging into healthy salads and serious coffee fans grabbing their caffeinated beverages. Although there's limited parking, a valet service is available — so there's no need for Thonglorites to swap their stilettos for Havaianas or worry about braving the sweltering heat.

All aboard to stomach satisfaction

Guru, Jarupat Buranastidporn, Published on 13/03/2015

» Bangkokians love two things: Instagramming daily meals and avoiding traffic-clogged roads. So we’ve decided to combine these two passions by hopping aboard the BTS to embark on an epicurean ride. Sure, the Skytrain is often freezing cold and overcrowded, but we appreciate the fact that it’s the most efficient way to chomp through town. Use our concise guide to eateries and hang-out spots that can be accessed by BTS, which every urbanite should visit at least once to get beyond the usual Thong Lor and Silom nests.
