Trick of the eye, treat for the lens

Guru, Jarupat Buranastidporn, Published on 21/08/2015

» As much as I love the outdoors, the rainy season has convinced me that staying inside is slightly better than finding myself at a hospital, diagnosed with influenza.

One helluva juicy deal

Guru, Jarupat Buranastidporn, Published on 21/08/2015

» I hate commitment. And if my other half is currently reading this, don't start getting giddy, thinking you've dodged a bullet. What I mean is, I hate the kind of commitment that involves signing a 12-month contract at the gym, which also happens to come with a hefty cancellation fee.

Polly wants some fashion

Guru, Jarupat Buranastidporn, Published on 14/08/2015

» Pimsiri "Ploen" Nakswasdi is the founder and designer of The Parrot (2/F, Zen Department Store, www.theparrotbangkok.com, fb.com/theparrotbangkok), an apparel brand with an all-day concept, meaning its looks are acceptable for both work and a night out. Perfect timing, we say, as the Bangkok fashion scene is leaning more and more toward casual chic, while propelling itself away from the stigma of the glitz and glam associated with over-dressed hi-sos. We catch up with Ploen to find out more about her brand, her muse and her next collection.

Shine bright like a diamond

» We all could do with a little brightening up, couldn't we? Living in Bangkok, after all, does take a toll on our health, and one of the first signs of just how much pollution, humidity and scorching heat we have to deal with often (and unfortunately) shows up on our faces.

» Ice cream will always be a big hit in a sweltering country like Thailand. So what happens when you represent an ice cream brand with a bright blue storefront and cutesy monsters?

Tipple your fancy

Guru, Jarupat Buranastidporn, Published on 24/07/2015

» Bangkok's nightlife has always enjoyed an abundance of variety. Whether you prefer sipping an overpriced cocktail on the 60th floor, sampling craft beers with the cool kids or getting trashed with backpackers on the kerbside at a 7-Eleven, this city's got you covered. Recently, though, BKK has stepped it up a notch, with brand new joints that offer a whole lot more than “black and coke” as a house special. This week, Guru takes a look at six of these watering holes and reveals what sets them apart from the rest.

Mai tai mania

» Brunch at five-star hotels can sometimes feel a little too uptight — especially the properties where shorts are not permitted and "proper" footwear is required. But ask yourself, isn't Sunday brunch supposed to be a relaxing and fun family affair?

Taking the (Digital) Leap

Guru, Jarupat Buranastidporn, Published on 17/07/2015

» Thailand is a long way from being recognised a high-tech country; sure we’ve got hundreds of glitzy malls and world-class restaurants but let’s face it, we’re not even sure if the 3G we’re using is real. All hope is not lost though, with Polpat “Popp” Songthamjitti, co-founder of GetLinks — a mobile recruitment platform that helps the new generation network and find jobs within the tech and digital industry — who’s spearheading the highly anticipated Bangkok Startup Job Fest (Jul 25-26, register at www.bkkstartupjobfest.getlinks.co). We catch up with him to find out what he’s trying to achieve at this event and what advice he has for those who wish to work for a startup company.

A rare find

Guru, Jarupat Buranastidporn, Published on 17/07/2015

» The swanky Suan Phlu neighbourhood is enjoying a growing abundance of hip eateries. You know, the non-flashy type, without the Lambos and the Porsches parked out front — the kind of suave that Thonglorites have yet to grasp. And this spanking new modern Japanese joint has nestled itself in the mix quite comfortably — if you can find it. Its lack of a sign and identification is purposeful, giving off a "cool-kids only", low-key vibe with huge romance potential. Forget fusion-style maki rolls with fancy names — you won't find those here. Sticking to traditional flavours, the concise two-page menu will no doubt cover every type of foodie's craving, whether that be with fatty tuna belly or melt-in-your-mouth Angus beef. In terms of decor, think East meets West; Charles and Ray Eames meets Hokusai; a delightful visual jumble of bright colours, patterned wallpaper, stunning art pieces and modern furniture.
