To celebrate, a new exhibition is showcasing the hun krabok (traditional Thai rod puppets), paintings and drawings from his 1989 production of Sam Kok (Romance Of The Three Kingdoms).

The circus comes to town

» During last month's Harmony World Puppet Carnival Bangkok Thailand 2014, audiences had the rare opportunity to experience the art of puppetry from 80 countries in one place — Rattanakosin Island, the old quarter of Bangkok. More than 100 stages and street shows were inspired by history, pop culture, social situations and used traditional forms of puppetry as well as influences of other performing arts such as circus. Many shows brought smiles, laughter and tears, and many were thought-provoking.

Battle of Indrajit a visual spectacular

» As splendid as ever, the Support Foundation's khon performance, The Battle of Indrajit: Nagabas, premiered on Loy Krathong day last week. Like shows in previous years, the beautiful dances, great acting, glittering sets, costumes and props did not fail to wow the audience. Satirical gags referring to the current political situation also brought a lot of laughter.

Khon brought to life

» On Arkas mountain in a dark forest full of naga (serpents) and other poisonous creatures, monkey warrior Champhuwaraj, disguised as a big black bear, storms a pavilion inside Rothan Hollow. In there he interrupts Intorachit, son of the demon King Thotsakan, during a ritual of soaking his arrow in the pool of naga venom.

» The Sun is 4m in diameter and made of resin cement. It is movable _ not through any cosmic force, but with hydraulics. To stop the flaming chariot of the Sun, the monkey god Hanuman enlarges himself only to be burned. No, Hanuman was told, the Sun cannot be stopped. It can only be hidden, and that piece of simple wisdom is the key to this action-packed chapter of the Ramakien epic.

A prince in art

» About 100 children and adults wearing red jongkraben were learning Thai classical dances at Ban Plainern, the private residence of Prince Narisaranuvattiwongse _ the Great Craftsman of Siam. Here in the lush tropical gardens around the beautiful traditional Thai wooden house in Klong Toey, classical dances are taught in the morning and traditional Thai music in the afternoon every Saturday.
