» Once upon a time in a town called Mahabalipuram, a group of royally-commissioned sculptors were working on a big boulder at the foot of a hill. As they were meticulously chiselling out one tiny bit after another from the rock surface, Lord Shiva, with a cobra around his chest and a trident in one of his hands, gradually appeared.

» On April 11, a magnitude 8.6 earthquake struck off the island of Sumatra, followed by several powerful aftershocks. High-level tsunami warning were sent out by nations with Indian Ocean coastlines. Six southern Thai provinces were put on full alert _ Phuket, Krabi, Phangnga, Ranong, Trang and Satun _ but luckily for everyone involved, a massive wave didn't materialise this time around and the alerts were called off within a matter of hours.

» White foamy waves from the turquoise-blue sea softly kiss the immaculate sandy beach of Tachai Island. The sand there is as white and soft as powder. From a boat, about half a kilometre from the island, the seawater is in two shades _ light blue and green. The water is crystal clear and you can see corals beneath with bare eyes.

Travel fair in Ranong

» Provincial and local authorities, the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) Chumphon Office together with the public and private sectors of Ranong invite all to the "Travel to Ranong and the Andaman Sea 2012 Fair", being held until March 24 in front of Muang Ranong Municipality Office. The aims are to promote local tourism, raise public awareness of Ranong's potential as a natural and cultural tourism destination, and increase incomes for local communities.
