Nothing standard about it

Life, Parisa Pichitmarn, Published on 07/09/2018

» Having worked as the assistant of hospitality for trailblazer Barry Sternlicht when the Starwood empire was just getting launched, Amar Lalvani was right at the birth of the whole "cool lifestyle hotel" movement as it came into fruition 20 years ago. "I was there since the beginning and I loved it," the California-born hotelier recalls. "I didn't seek it, but when I saw it, it encapsulated everything I liked to do so I just stuck with it."

Shopping with all your senses

» It feels like there is an Hour Glass store at practically every main street corner in Singapore, but the Hour Glass store that rules them all is situated on Bideford Road, just off Orchard and right next to Paragon. Fashioned under the name Malmaison and having sat at that location since 2011, the opulent enclave of 745m² is largely under the radar to the common pedestrian, despite the fact that what is housed inside could well become your most lush watch-buying experience ever. LIFE

Hip, cool and happening

Life, Parisa Pichitmarn, Published on 24/11/2017

» Over the past few weeks, one particular investment move from our shores -- somewhat equivalent to Crazy Rich Asian's Astrid going on a haute couture shopping rampage -- has been the talk of the town. Thailand's prominent real estate developer, Sansiri, has just invested 2.8 billion baht to buy shares in six of the some of the world's hippest, coolest and innovative names: Standard International, One Night, Hostmaker, JustCo, Farmshelf and Monocle. It's a result of stagnant sales back home and Sansiri's strategy to offer an all-inclusive living solution to their customers, as their president Srettha Thavisin explains. To choose to invest in companies that are young, inventive and trendy, however, shows how the real estate giant has their sights set on the tech-savvy millennials of tomorrow.

» John C. Jay draws you in like a magnet. Nothing short of being a marketing legend, the Chinese-American adman also comes across as a winsome person. When you hear him say that he's known to "stretch the boundaries of the brand, but not break it", he doesn't come across as bragging. Jay gives us the stretched out hand gesture equivalent too, to match his vibrant personality.

From Amsterdam to Amsterdenim

Life, Parisa Pichitmarn, Published on 04/06/2015

» Known as the denim Mecca of the world, today heads turn to Japan for the finest and most premium jeans man can produce. Italy runs a pretty close second, being home to some of the best fabric mills, as well as having a long heritage of vintage looks. Mention this textile and America too comes to mind, for being the nation that has globally popularised jeans, ensuring the product transcended its original functional purpose of being worn by labourers in the mines. But for those outside of the denim loop, it is hard to envision how the Netherlands, a country anything but fashion-forward, could be seen as the new centrepoint for denim, both commercial and niche.
