In spite of the superhighways, BTS, malls, majestic wats and palaces, Thailand remains rooted in its feudal past. It is the same in a few other countries surrounding Thailand.

» Re: "Don't knock the lockdowns" (PostBag, Jan 17). Before 2020 I had never heard of lockdowns, which were first introduced in Wuhan, China, a country many see as a totalitarian state. It was copied almost all over the world as a way to stem the disease. A few countries did not follow the Chinese path, including Sweden, which was heavily criticised for leaving schools, restaurants, etc. open.
