Those pesky pigeons and a plastic owl

» Fond as I am of our feathered friends I admit to getting in a bit of a flap over the rapidly increasing number of pigeons (nok pilab) that have been descending on our residence in recent times. Some people call pigeons "rats with wings", others more generously "doves without the PR". I must confess to be leaning towards the first of those opinions.

» For most of June I have been squirrelled away in Chaiyaphum and very pleasant it has been too. There has been a fair amount of rain which is good news for our rubber trees which were looking decidedly thirsty.

» Sitting exams is undoubtedly one of life's more unpleasant experiences, which most of us sadly cannot avoid. I have memories of exams looming from my college days and boldly attempting to get down to some serious revision. Of course, this was usually abandoned after 30 minutes as I gave up and sprinted off to the pub. It's amazing how much clearer Plato's philosophy became after a pint or two.

» Oxford Dictionaries recently announced "selfie" as the new word of the year. Hardly an awe-inspiring word, but an accurate description of people taking a photo of themselves on a smartphone and subsequently uploading it on to a website for the world to goggle at. Apparently the usage of "selfie" has become so huge in the past 12 months it could no longer be ignored. A frightening thought.
