Double Fun with Tinglish

Guru, Pornchai Sereemongkonpol, Published on 19/08/2022

» As a Thai who writes in English for a living, I'm a bit of a language nerd who's naturally inclined to spot Tinglish in everyday life.

Before we go to the moon...

Guru, Pornchai Sereemongkonpol, Published on 18/12/2020

» On Monday, Anek Laothamatas, the minister of Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation, revealed that, by the middle of next month, a plan to send a spacecraft into the moon's orbit in seven years from now will be announced. According to him, Thailand will be the fifth Asian country to achieve this extraterrestrial feat, following China, Japan, South Korea and India. Khun Anek added that taxpayers' money will be used to yield tangible results rather than just more research and teaching, at the launch of a project to crowdfund locally-made vaccines against Covid-19 led by Chulalongkorn University.

Tinglish test

Guru, Pornchai Sereemongkonpol, Published on 20/04/2018

» At the risk of sounding like a grammar Nazi, it irks (and amuses) me every time when I see Tinglish. Why? Because even in their less-than-perfect constructions, you get what they are trying to say, albeit not right away.

Are you AEC-ready?

Guru, Pornchai Sereemongkonpol, Published on 22/01/2016

» All those years leading up to AEC were spent in childlike excitement in Thailand. Now it's been 22 days since the official launch of the much-anticipated Asean Economic Community, but if you've only managed to (vaguely) memorise all 10 names of Asean members and their corresponding greetings -- and practically nothing else -- don't worry. Forget experts' and authorities' mundane and serious suggestions on how to prepare for the AEC. This week, Guru makes getting to know AEC fun for everyone.

Things that could have been better expressed

News, Roger Crutchley, Published on 10/08/2014

» While PostScript has over the years taken occasional liberties with “Tinglish” on signs, menus and the like, a sobering fact is that we native speakers of English have never mastered our own language. So we are hardly in a position to poke fun at others. As is quite evident each week, Crutch is still grappling with the basics and there are millions of British people doing the same every day.

Don’t they know it’s ‘our’ Songkran?

News, Kong Rithdee, Published on 22/03/2014

» Your Honour, ladies and gentlemen of the tribunal of the International Court of Universal Justice. I’ve come to this court today to represent the Cultural Watchdog and Tourism Authority of Thailand, and I henceforth present to the esteemed tribunal the grave, scandalous, hair-raising offence committed by a group of people in Singapore (I think) against the splendid and extremely wet Siamese tradition known as Songkran.
