» In 1971, the Department of Dramatic Arts at Chulalongkorn University's Faculty of Arts was established by the renowned "Kru Yai”, Associate Professor Sodsai Pantoomkomol, a National artist recognized for her contributions to performing arts (theatre and television) in 2011. It marked a significant milestone as the first institution of higher education in Thailand to offer courses in Dramatic Arts, covering Acting, Directing, Producing, Theatre Design, Drama Literature, and Stage Management. Over the past 52 years, this department has nurtured numerous talented graduates, who have played pivotal roles in advancing and enriching the performing arts landscape in Thailand. The dedication to preserving and passing on skills, knowledge, and a commitment to excellence is a testament to the department's founder, its alumni, and its current students.

» Dr John, the High Priest of New Orleans' hoodoo, the Night Tripper and one of the heirs to Professor Longhair's legacy, died last week at the age of 77. He was widely regarded as one of the Crescent City's most accomplished musicians -- a master bandleader, songwriter, guitarist, voodoo showman and pianist. He was comfortable moving between blues, jazz, funk, boogie-woogie and anything else he fancied, and he was known as a keeper of New Orleans' piano traditions.

To some of us simple minded non-Chula graduates it appears that Mr Netiwit has clearly understood the message from King Rama V given in 1873 when he expressed "the necessity of rebuilding a more equal relationship between different groups in society". What isn't apparent is that the administrators running the university have understood this message and taken steps to advance these opinions.
