» Jantima Sukmetta, 52, gradually unfolds a batik fabric. It has distinguished colours of golden yellow and brown, the naturally dyed colours from turmeric and leaves of khonthi (beach vitex). The khonthi plant is easily found along beaches in tambon Na Thap of Chana district in the southern province of Songkhla, where her Me-D Na Thap Batik Group is located.

» Like many others, I am not in the mood to travel during the partial lockdown but that will not stop me from exploring. From my computer screen, I can explore various sites in Bangkok and also other parts of the country. This will at least give me an idea of places to add to my itinerary in the future.
Nakhon Phanom: More than meets the eye

» The public space along the Mekong in the town of Nakhon Phanom was quite bright. It was illuminated by the yellow light of street lamps and colourful decorative lights to celebrate Christmas and the New Year. The ambience highly contrasted with the other side of the river, a quiet scene of the reserved forest of the Phou Hin Poun National Protected Area in Khammouane Province in Laos.

» It will be the quietest celebration for the coming anniversary of Bangkok. The capital will reach its 238th year on April 21. During the past years, the Ministry of Culture hosted traditional performances, light and sound shows and exhibitions to mark the anniversary in various places.

» Tea pickers, each having a bamboo basket on one side, walked in a row on their way out of a tea plantation. It was late afternoon. The sky was clear and the sunlight was about to turn yellow. My travel companions and I ambled along the same road but in the opposite direction of the tea pickers. We were on our way to the tea farm to have our tea-picking experience.

» Soil has been piled up and from afar it looks like a red hill. Frangipani trees without leaves or flowers stand around the foothill as if guarding it from intruders. From the base where locals laid flowers, one can only see some big umbrellas -- the kind used in monk-ordination ceremonies -- at the hilltop.

They had prepared bouquets of colourful flowers and a large bunch of 999 red roses for the admired star of Phi Mak Phrakanong and 20 Mai U-Turn Wai Huai Jai Return (Suddenly Twenty).
