Thailand and the International Criminal Court

» Debates are going on as to whether Thailand should ratify and become a party to the 1998 Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court (ICC), which Thailand signed on Oct 2, 2000. It has also been suggested that Thailand make a declaration accepting the ICC's jurisdiction over incidents in the past involving serious crimes of a massive scale by Thais against Thais on Thai soil in which justice for the victims has been elusive under the Thai legal system. These actions concerning the ICC need approval by the National Assembly, comprising both the House of Representatives and the Senate.

» Soon after Move Forward Party (MFP) leader Pita Limjaroenrat failed to gather enough support for the premiership, some voters launched retaliatory campaigns with the hashtag #senatorbusiness to boycott business networks of handpicked junta senators who rejected him or abstained. Senators then took legal action against those who they believe harass them and their families. Voters are not only cutting off social relations but also punishing senators for committing crimes against democracy.

» A recent joint statement by US President Joe Biden and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi "expressed deep concern about the deteriorating situation in Myanmar" and called for a constructive dialogue to aid the country's transition toward an inclusive federal democratic system. Unfortunately, the US-led sanctions policy has undercut this goal and made a bad situation worse.
