» A 4 minute 36 second film clip showing the happy time spent by the young King Bhumibol Adulyadej and Queen Sirikit at the stunning Phrom Lok Waterfall in Phrom Khiri district, Nakhon Si Thammarat province, in 1959 brings smiles and tears of joy to almost everyone who views it. This has inspired many to visit tambon Phrom Lok, which is now easy to reach by car unlike when the royal couple travelled by Jeep on a 10km dirt road.

» One morning during the rainy season, around 30 adventure seekers could be seen tying used tyres together. They then took these out on a raft to install them as "homes for fish" in Ban Bang Sa Kao in Chanthaburi's Laem Sing district on the Gulf of Thailand.

» Ruins and ancient sites are always under threat from time and disaster. The great flood of 2011, for instance, damaged 128 archeological sites on and around the city island of Ayutthaya. After the incident, the government provided a budget of 600 million baht for the clean-up and restoration work, and there was also financial and technical aid from Unesco, as well as certain foreign countries.

» At Wat Sung Men in Phrae province, monks and a dozen local villagers are busy scanning the temple's old manuscripts into a computer. The same activity, in fact, is happening at several temples in the North, including Wat Phra That Si Chom Thong in Chiang Mai as well as others in Lamphun and Nan. Initiated by a German professor, the novel efforts of digitising and conserving ancient manuscripts have caught on with enthusiasm among locals.

In fairy tales, kings and queens live luxury lives in castles. That didn't happen in Thailand throughout the 89-year lifetime of King Bhumibol Adulyadej, who passed away last year.

» Dogs are man's best friend. And dogs are a king's best friends as well in Thailand. For almost 20 years, Khun Tongdaeng, the monarch's favourite pet dog, stayed beside King Bhumibol Adulyadej as friend and guard. Khun Tongdaeng died nearly a year before the king's passing on Oct 13 last year, but her love and loyalty is everlasting and is now reflected in her life-size sculpture, which has been placed at the royal crematorium at Sanam Luang.

» Their skilful hands focused on art pieces they were creating, and their eyes were locked on the details. Their hearts, apparently, were with HM the late King Bhumibol Adulyadej, who passed away on Oct 13 last year. At the Fine Arts Department's Office of Traditional Arts in Nakhon Pathom, two groups of 20 men and women from all walks of life brought out their best during a recent audition where the office recruited volunteers to help official artisans build a royal urn and coffin and sculpt statues for decorating the royal crematorium.

» Forty years ago, a five-year-old me was in a jeep that zigzagged past mountains, slopes and lush valleys to Angkhang Mountain, about 1,400m above sea level, in Chiang Mai's Fang district. At that time, many parts of the mountain were full of opium farms. Thousands of red, pink and white poppies were in full bloom and attracted tourists who enjoyed taking photographs and bought dried opium poppies as souvenirs.
