Behind the wall

Life, Pattramon Sukprasert, Published on 05/04/2016

» Last Monday, the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) put up an eviction notice at the Mahakan Fort community. City Hall has set an April 30 deadline for residents to relocate from their 200-year-old quarters, a culmination of a long dispute between the authorities and villagers. The BMA's plan is to turn the area into a public park. Meanwhile residents, conservationists and a few architects argue that people should be part of living history, and the plan to drive locals out will destroy the character of the city.

Symbols of cultural preservation

Life, Pattramon Sukprasert, Published on 28/03/2016

» Muslim communities have a long history of making an impact on our landscape. There are around 3,500 mosques scattered around the country, with over 200 in Bangkok and nearby areas, some of them dating back over a century. Welcome to the Hotel Bangkok

Life, Pattramon Sukprasert, Published on 03/07/2015

» As a city that receives 25 million visitors a year, Bangkok abounds with hotels. The majority of them are new, gleaming and built according to the latest design trend — imposing structures with a lot of glass. Hidden in the shadows of modernity, however, are hotels that seem to be trapped in time, voluntarily or not. Wrestling with the changing decades and urban development, a number of hotels in Bangkok have maintained their quaint appeal and their existence today tells stories about Thailand's economic development, the Cold War era and the time when the city first began to receive mass tourism in the second half of the 20th century.
