So much art, so little time

Life, Kaona Pongpipat, Published on 01/02/2017

» Chiang Mai got its fill last weekend, and now it's time for the Bangkok edition of Galleries' Night, organised by the French embassy. First of all, it just amazes you how active the scene is. Running on Friday and Saturday, there will be more than 40 galleries participating in the event where venues open late into the night.

Life, Kaona Pongpipat, Published on 27/07/2016

» If "Fear" -- Manit Sriwanichapoom's latest photography and video show, which opened over the past weekend at H Gallery, Tang Contemporary Art and Kathmandu Photo Gallery (and at Yavuz Gallery in Singapore at the end of the month) -- isn't the hottest topic of discussion in the capital's art scene already, it soon will be.

The traditional office may go way of the dinosaur

Life, Kaona Pongpipat, Published on 06/07/2016

» In the not-so-distant future people may no longer be working in offices but instead will turn to alternative venues such as co-working spaces. This speculation is not hasty, considering it is the current vision of Charle Charoenphan, co-founder of one of Thailand's first co-working companies HUBBA. Since its launch in 2012, the business has thrived and Charle said in the past few years roughly 500 such spaces have sprung up across Thailand.

Chart-ing Facebook

Life, Kaona Pongpipat, Published on 16/05/2016

» It has been eight years since writer Chart Kobjitti, national artist and two-time SEA Write Award winner, published his book Lorm Wong Khui, a collection of articles written for Si San magazine. Eight years is a long time, especially for fans of various generations who literally grew up with his writing, from the cursed life of Ai-fak in 1981's Khamphiphaksa (The Judgement) that won his first SEA Write award, and the tumultuous story of life, friendship and lots of booze in 1988's Phan Ma Ba, to a miserable account of age and death in a nursing home in 1993's Wela (Time), for which he won the award once again.

Cool Thailand?

Life, Kaona Pongpipat, Published on 29/04/2016

» It is only with reference to J-pop or K-pop that we have a clue as to what the word "T-pop" could possibly mean: an attempt at cultural export -- film, music and other forms of entertainment -- to create a "Thai brand" of cool. It's better late than never, so the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) has recently launched a campaign, with Thai star Mario Maurer as the presenter, with the aim to boost tourism in Thailand and expand the entertainment market in China.

Dracula: more handsome than scary

Life, Kaona Pongpipat, Published on 25/02/2016

» Tickets for Dracula: Blood Is Life, Ewing Entertainment Worldwide's debut stage play in Thailand, start at 1,200 baht and we simply may never agree on whether the show is worth the price. What we will agree on, however, is that Chulachak "Hugo" Chakrabongse, starring as Count Dracula, is a good-looking man. Women love him and so do men, straight or gay.

» Aside from "Journey Of 999 Elephants" -- an exhibition in which 999 artists joined to paint 999 exact same models of elephants that are now strewn everywhere from CentralWorld, Zen, on the BTS Skywalk over Ratchaprasong intersection and on the second floor leading to the entrance of Central Chidlom to Central Embassy -- the highlight of the capital's art scene this month is "Galleries' Night", which is taking place this Friday and Saturday.
