The long procession

Life, Karnjana Karnjanatawe, Published on 16/04/2015

» The slow rhythm of gongs, drums and cymbals can be heard from afar. The sound is like an invitation for people in Ban Kong Lom in Wiang Haeng district, the far-flung town bordering Chiang Mai and Shan State in Myanmar, to join the procession for the mass novice ordination ceremony, known as Poi Sang Long.

City of 11 gates

Life, Pichaya Svasti, Published on 28/08/2014

» Situated right in the middle of Isan, the country's northeastern region, 512km from Bangkok by road, Roi Et has been a major settlement for more than 300 years. It was once called Saket Nakhon and referred to as "a large city with 11 gates and 11 vassal cities", but in modern-day terms it would be more accurately described as a medium-sized market town.

Turning full circle

Life, Peerawat Jariyasombat, Published on 12/12/2013

» Khun Yuam is a sleepy amphur in Mae Hong Son province that hasn't seen a great deal of excitement since the end of World War II. Right on the border with Myanmar's Shan State is the hamlet of Ban Huay Ton Noon. From there it's only 30km inland to the district capital, also called Khun Yuam, and this was the same route taken for centuries by invading armies, loggers, seasonal farm labourers and merchants carrying goods back and forth on carts drawn by teams of oxen.

» Many regard Lamphun as an extension of its more populous neighbour, Chiang Mai, perhaps because the two are only 26km apart. They are linked by a modern highway, but motorists who are not in a hurry prefer taking the old scenic route.

Published on 23/06/2013

» The Imperial Mae Ping Hotel in Chiang Mai recently hosted a gala charity dinner and dance with the theme ‘Burma in the Spotlight’. The evening was in support of The Best Friend Burmese Library, a non-profit organization dedicated to assisting people from Burma, including compassionate care projects for migrants and refugees facing extreme difficulty, such as heroic Chaa Nay Choo, the 14-year old boy from Burma’s Karenni State who was seriously burned whilst attempting to save others in the tragic Mae Surin Refugee Camp fire on 22 March 2013.

On the road in Myanmar

Life, Peerawat Jariyasombat, Published on 30/05/2013

» On a country road, I make my way past vast rice paddies that extend all the way to the horizon. Except for a few thatched-roof huts under the shade of a Mon-style golden pagoda, there is nothing else to interrupt the stunning view. It is close to harvest season and the fields are turning gold. Such impressive scenery reminds me of the word "Suvannabhumi", the golden land in Southeast Asia mentioned in records more than 2,500 years ago.

Ethnic crossroads

Life, Pongpet Mekloy, Published on 07/02/2013

» Kazakhstan is not a totally unfamiliar name to the average Thai, since it is occasionally mentioned in news reports, especially those concerning sports. One of the republics of the former Soviet Union, it is now the ninth largest country in the world with a land area five times that of Thailand's. It is a major oil exporter and thus one of the most prosperous countries in Central Asia.
