» Last weekend, Something Missing, a performance by South Korea's Theatre Momggol and B-Floor Theatre, which won Best Movement-based Performance from the International Association of Theatre Critics (Thailand Centre) last year, was back at Thong Lor Art Space for its second instalment, called The Rite Of Passage.

» In a stage performance that just finished its run on Sunday, performers re-enacted scenes in which victims were hunted, beaten and strangled to death. In an art exhibition opening tomorrow, we'll see in paintings traces of atrocious scenes in the foreground while the surface is heavily smudged with paint, to the point of abstraction.

» Art Matters this month begins with words of congratulations to Speedy Grandma which just celebrated its fourth anniversary this past weekend. After closing down for several months because, according to co-founder Lee Anantawat, "we were just bored and tired", the gallery in Charoen Krung 28 is now back and it's just, well, as fun and slightly dingy as before.
'A Painter from Bikaner' come to Bangkok

» At Serindia Gallery, all is still and calm until you look closer and everything -- the landscapes, animals and plants -- suddenly comes to life. Magnifying glasses are of course provided. In the exhibition "A Painter From Bikaner", Indian traditional miniature painter Mahaveer Swami presents a selection of his exquisitely detailed works whose subjects range from the mundane daily lives in India, landscapes and animals to tales from mythology.

» Chiang Mai has long been Bangkok's arch-rival when it comes to being the country's art hub -- the capital has the money and the galleries, while the northern city has the vibe and an increasing role as artists' preferred habitat. This Sunday, Chiang Mai will take a huge leap with the opening of MAIIAM Contemporary Art Museum, a privately owned space by Jean Michel Beurdeley, his late wife Patsri Bunnag and their son Eric Bunnag Booth.

» The art dispute of the year is upon us. As the art community sees the rift open up, it also reminds society of the ideological divide that has plagued Thailand for many years. The stage is the exhibition called "The Truth_ To Turn It Over" curated by Gwangju Museum of Art to commemorate the 1980 Gwangju Uprising against the military dictatorship; it's been almost a month since the show opened in South Korea, but it's still very much "an ongoing process" -- a very heated one at that.
Cool Thailand?

» It is only with reference to J-pop or K-pop that we have a clue as to what the word "T-pop" could possibly mean: an attempt at cultural export -- film, music and other forms of entertainment -- to create a "Thai brand" of cool. It's better late than never, so the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) has recently launched a campaign, with Thai star Mario Maurer as the presenter, with the aim to boost tourism in Thailand and expand the entertainment market in China.

» Around this time in 2014, the late artist Mamafaka's one-eyed gigantic monster Mr. HellYeah, spray-painted at the ruins near BTS Ratchathewi, was "bombed" by another graffiti group. The original graffiti was done as part of the first edition of street art festival Bukruk in 2013, and when the controversy about it being defaced erupted, the unauthorised vandalism of the authorised vandalism exemplied the very essence of street art: nothing is permanent.

Although long overdue, it's great news for art lovers that Chiang Mai Art Conversation, or CAC, has just recently launched the Chiang Mai Art Map.
