Getting soft power right

Life, Published on 08/01/2024

» After three months in office, the Srettha Thavisin government has raved on about populist policies in the guise of digital wallets and soft power projects that will create income to boost our declining economy. With optimism, we learned that Paetongtarn Shinawatra, Pheu Thai party leader and head of the National Soft Power Strategy Committee (NSPSC), has drafted a budget of 5.1 billion baht to boost festivals and creative industries. From ideology to action

» 'Sex and bombs, all you need is sex and bombs to make the world go round," says veteran Thai artist Vasan Sitthiket, commenting on a 2011 painting from his "Sex Bomb: 24 Hours" series -- a portrait of himself drawn atop a scantily clad woman's body in a seductive pose, a bombshell by his side. Although the series is a denunciation of the modern pornography -- money, power and lies -- that we are fed on a daily basis, there's more to Vasan's work than just lust and violence.
