Spellbinding collaboration proves less is more

» I once had the rare privilege to see the great bluesman and songwriter Earl King, who wrote the New Orleans Mardi Gras anthem Big Chief, perform in a small club in Tokyo. Before he took to the stage another band performed, with a well-known young blues guitarist playing fast action licks and riffs at breakneck speed. In complete contrast, when Earl King played guitar he played far fewer notes, paring down the music to its essentials. I can still remember King's playing, but I can't recall anything the young pretender played.

» The legendary Peruvian singer-songwriter Susana Baca tops the November Transglobal World Music Chart with her new album, Palabras Urgentes (Real World), which was released last month. The album celebrates the 50th anniversary of an amazing career, which has encompassed ethnomusicology, researching folklore and teaching, a long career as a singer, and a stint as Minister of Culture.

» Garifuna music, a sublime blend of local indigenous and African music from Honduras and Belize has topped the European Broadcast Union's World Music charts. Led by the late Andy Palacio, a famous "Punta rock" (Belize's most popular music) musician who returned to his roots to resurrect Garifuna culture through music. Aurelio picked up the baton from Palacio and has made his name internationally with a series of delightful albums.
