NACC, OECD Collaborate to Strengthen Thailand's Anti-Bribery Laws

» The National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC) hosted a meeting to launch the assessment report and recommendations of the “Reinforcing Thailand’s Anti-Corruption Framework” project under the Country Programme Phase 2 between the Government of Thailand and the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD). The event took place on 30th August 2024 at The Okura Prestige Hotel in Bangkok, aimed to present the key findings from the evaluation of Thailand’s anti-corruption legal and policy frameworks with recommendations for further action and implementation to align the country’s framework with OECD standards.

» The Thailand Accident and Research Centre (TARC), situated within the School of Engineering and Technology at the Asian Institute of Technology (AIT), hosted the inaugural Thailand Road Traffic Safety Forum with Mr. Montri Dechasakulsom, Deputy Permanent Secretary for the Ministry of Transport, overseeing the opening. This pivotal event, organised on 13 March 2024, united a wide range of stakeholders, including representatives from the Ministry of Transport, the Ministry of Public Health, and other pertinent government bodies.

Thailand Contemplates EU-Inspired Regulatory Shift

» With the growth of the platform economy in Thailand, the cabinet has approved the 10 principles on platform economy law which provide a basis for the much-anticipated Platform Economy Act (PEA), a draft of which is underway with a preliminary draft having been distributed for comments from a closed group of stakeholders. The PEA is intended to replace the Royal Decree on digital platforms, passed in 2022, which merely impose notification obligations on platforms. Interestingly, the PEA draws from both the EU's Digital Services Act (DSA) and Digital Markets Act (DMA), combining regulations on illegal content and transparency with regulations that aim to regulate the market powers of the so-called 'gatekeepers' in one Act.

Panasonic Collaborates with Thai Authorities to Seize Counterfeit Batteries Valued at Over 17 Million Baht

» On July 26, 2023, Panasonic, in collaboration with the Economic Crime Suppression Division under the Royal Thai Police (“ECD Police”) and Lazada Thailand, successfully apprehended a major seller of counterfeit batteries operating on online platforms. This operation resulted in the seizure of more than 400,000 fake Panasonic batteries with a total estimated value of over 17 million baht. This represents the highest number of seized counterfeit Panasonic products in Thailand and Southeast Asia to date. All individuals apprehended in the raid are now facing criminal charges related to trademark infringement under the Thai Trademark Act, carrying a maximum penalty of imprisonment for up to four years, a fine of up to 400,000 baht, or both.

» The Global Compact Network Thailand (GCNT), in collaboration with the Rights and Liberties Protection Department, Ministry of Justice, the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), the International Organisation for Migration (IOM) and the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), held the 6th National Dialogue on Business and Human Rights on the theme “Strengthening access to remedial mechanisms and complaints handling for migrant workers in Thailand”, which is one of the key elements of the United Nations Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights (UNGPs). The Dialogue served as a forum for exchanging knowledge and enhancing access to effective remedial mechanisms and complaints handling of Thai companies.
