Couch surfing

Guru, Eric E Surbano, Published on 30/07/2021

» Most of us dream of walking down the aisle -- the airplane one -- and the awkwardness that comes with trying to find your seat while avoiding people putting their bags in the overhead bins.

Eat, sleep, repeat

Guru, Eric E Surbano, Published on 25/09/2020

» With tourism at an all-time low in a country that relies heavily on tourism, the government is scrambling to soften the blow on the economy. Hotels have taken it pretty hard, with a few reopening but still operating at low to medium capacity. However, there are hotels that have come up with a plan to entice spending at their properties: dine and stay promotions. It's pretty straightforward: you spend a certain amount to feast and eat your fill, and then you're awarded with a free stay or a discount on your next booking. Eat and be rewarded for it. Loosen those belts and throw diet rules out the window, as we list the hotels that are offering dine and stay promos.

Welcome to Jap-Am

» Tokiojo's location over at the student-hub of Samyan Mitrtown is a "blink-and-you'll-miss-it" situation. It may not be too big, but at the risk of sounding provocative, size doesn't matter when the place gives off some cool, urban Tokyo street-side vibes.

Quick & easy

» Mexican cuisine isn't new to Bangkok. It's pretty accessible and there are a number of different restos to choose from so it's not exactly something you have to search for. Bowlito sits comfortably in the middle of the cheap Mexican fast food eats and the expensive ones.

No FIFA FOMO

Guru, Eric E Surbano, Published on 29/06/2018

» We are smack in the middle of the World Cup, and unlike Americans who use phrases like "World Series" or "World Champions" despite having only American participants, the majority of the world is actually involved in this tournament. There's only about two weeks left, but there are a lot of matches to watch and a whole lot of World Cup to keep you going. Fortunately, Bangkok is high on the World Cup fever, and we've got a number of places you can visit to keep that high.

Just a couple of foodies

Guru, Eric E Surbano, Published on 09/02/2018

» It's that time of the year when couples come out in full-force, restaurants are jampacked, roses and chocolates are more expensive, and single people are more bitter than usual. Yes, St Valentine's Day is upon us and that means couples all over the place. We could have just given you a list of places you could go to for a special dinner (actually, we did -- check our Food listings). But in lieu of the upcoming "festivities", if you could call it that, we decided to round up a number of foodie power couples to get to know their favourite restos and what they do during on this romantic day. Perhaps we noobs could learn a thing or two from them.

I'm turning Japanese

Guru, Eric E Surbano, Published on 01/12/2017

» The setting: 72 Courtyard is not a stranger to restaurants and foodie destinations. There's a number of choices for you depending on what you're craving for and one of them is called Lucky Fish. This Japanese fusion resto, which recently revamped its menu, is on the ground floor on the left at the very front of 72 Courtyard and is designed to give off a subtle modern Japanese vibe. You can choose to dine and drink over at the bar or perhaps in one of the open air tables where you can pity those stuck in Thong Lor traffic. If you don't feel a strong Japanese vibe from the aesthetics (which we think is something they weren't going for anyway) then the food will definitely change your mind.

Thai references gone wrong

Guru, Eric E Surbano, Published on 04/08/2017

» There's nothing like that feeling of pride when we see Thailand being mentioned somewhere in movies, sitcoms or games even. The Land of Smiles' big break would probably be the James Bond film, The Man With The Golden Gun. Aside from movies, Thai food has been getting a lot of recognition as well and it's always such a delight when we hear the gang from The Big Bang Theory mention that they're going to have Thai for dinner as they all gather around, sitting on the couch. While we are definitely pleased with the references being made to Thailand, there are some of them that are... well, wrong. We do realise these are all fictional, but we've compiled some of our favourites anyway for your entertainment.

Ginormous dishes

Guru, Eric E Surbano, Published on 19/05/2017

» Food is awesome. That's the gospel truth. But you know what's better than food? Large amounts of food. Think about it. A burger is great, but a huge burger is awesome. Japanese curry is delicious, but 2kg worth of it is just epic. With that in mind, we here at Guru have rounded up a few restaurants that serve huge dishes. We recommend you try these with at least four people, or you can go for it all by yourself -- if you dare. One thing's for sure: if you do go and try these dishes, you'll go home with a humungous food coma, and that's not necessarily a bad thing.
